  • For Four noisy box

OK, I have a 2004 (54) For Four 1.5passion 5spd Manual that has covered 75,000 miles. Recently it has developed a noise from the box/diff area that sound like a bearing.
When cold it is not very noticable. When hot it is quite loud and appears to get louder as i go through the gears.
i have no idea what the problem is or the cure!
    Any ideas would be apriciated,
    Thanks for looking

Are you sure its not wheel bearing? I had one go on a previous forfour, and quite early on too.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Don't think it's a wheel bearing as i have had it up on a stand and run the car in gear and the noise is around the box/diff area as apossed to the wheels?

Would it be posible for you to clean it out? Ummm just wondering, as you could have something loose in there or around there, like a stone? Usually when a noice occures... I've found it usually disapears after a good clean. If the noice were around the wheels, i would of recomended you looking to see if any of the wheel arch flaps were loose/flapping down... Can happen and does make some noice against the wheels... Any how, best of luck and i hope you manage to figure it out soon. P.s check you butterfly valve too... Under the front end of the forfour... Good luck mate

Have you any oil leaks and have you checked the gearbox oil level?

only real mechanical issues on the petrols are bearings and driveshafts!!

you sound like you know what you are doing though and i've not heard of any gearbox issues outside of the softtouch auto box so good luck and post up how you get on....!!

there is a recent posts on where to obtain new gearboxes i made earlier!!

Could still be a wheel bearing. If you're running the engine with one wheel on the stand everything in the final drive will be whirring away. The differential gears normally don't run that fast in use on the road.
