Tyre size for 17" wheels?

Thinking of getting some 17" wheels (next couple of month, possibly) - which is the optimal tyre size, please?

Well when you asked in an earlier thread about tyre replacements I suggested Falkens looked a good deal. Your tyre choices on the 17" rims are severely limited if you're thinking of Brabus rims and there's not much available apart from Falkens.
Suggest you go over and have a look at www.forfour.co.uk there's lots of info on there about 17" rims and tyres from people that have them.

Yes, I have done... there it says that the original wheel is 6.5” ET 46 4x114.3mm 205/40/17. Of course, I have no idea what that all means.
I take it one of those, then should be just fine?

Well they've given you the relevant size for the 17" rims so you can now look for them on the internet yourself. If I were looking for bigger wheels though I'd go for 16". That's a compromise you may find riding on 17" a bit firm and you won't find out till you've spent your money. Anyway don't jump in straight away you're talking to the guys that have got the bigger wheels. The more information you get the more chance of a good purchase.

Have seen n had questions on 'forfour.co.uk' about tyres and sizes...and it does depend on what you want the car to do and what ride quality you want.

17"x7" wheels with 205/40/17 tyres give fab grip but ride hard. Harder still if you lower the car. Wide tyre choice available.

16"x7" (or 16"x6.5") wheels with 205/45/16 give great grip and ride is not so hard. Tyre choice is limited though.

Standard 15" wheels with 195/50/15 tyres give smooth ride but not as good grip as wider 205 profiles on 16" or 17" dia wheels.

All tyres of the same size are not the same in what they offer in terms of mpg/noise/ride/grip/mileage.
I'd recommend Toyo Proxes T-1R's, Avon ZZ3's, or Falkens. Really it's all a matter of personal choice.
