  • Rear of car Squeaking.

    Morning all,

I now have a constant squeak coming from the rear of my forfour cdi.

Last year my girlfriend curbed one of the alloys and this created a small squeak that came and went. Since then the car failed the mot due to a faulty wheel bearing (which has been replaced.) Since then there has still been the odd squeak wilst driving although pretty random and rare so it hasnt bothered me.
Now however the squeak is almost constant whilst im driving!

Is this a bearing again? anyone have any ideas? please help its driving me mad!

    Thanks

    hiya Bru...

could be a number of things!

(i'm assuming you have discs on the back of a Cdi)

    1) wheel bearings
    2) the brake shields rusting and rubbing
    3) grit between pads and discs
    4) discs pads wearing out (how many miles has the car done on the current set)

also, depends if its constant or only intermittent like when going over bumps which could be something like springs/shocks or exhast

if you suspect the wheel, jack up that side and spin the wheel by hand (chock the front wheels if you do this) and see what you can hear!!

wheel bearing you will be able to feel the rumble within the hub (put your hand round the back while you spin) plus you may also have some "play" so test by holding the wheel at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock and try and move in and out towards (perpendicular to the wheel rotation)

    erm - what else?? dunno...

wander over to www.forfour.co.uk and see if anyone has any other thoughts

Thats great advise thanks. I will give this a try at the weekend and post the outcome.

I have 46700 on the clock and the car has rear disks and pads which where changed im sure about 20k miles ago.

Hi all had a quick look under the car today as the squeaking has got worse! Could this be a spring not sitting in the mount properly?

          Re: Rear of car Squeaking.

what kind of squeek is it? is it a dry bush type squeek, can you pin point where the squeek is comming from, and can you recreate the squeek when 'bouncing' the the rear?
if it were an incorrectly seated spring then im guessing that there would be more of a twang than a squeek

Popped to the garage need new front and rear pads they have advised.

I have a forfour cdi 1.5 may be a daft question but is there any different between the pads for a cdi and a petrol forfour?

            Thanks
