smartforfour clutch change

I have just bought a 05 Forfour pritty cheap, only cost me £2250, but in the not to soon future its going to need a new clutch as it does slip if you boot it in say 4-5th.

I reckon i can drive it like it is for another 6 months yet but wanted the know the cheapest i can get a clutch kit for it and also are there any guides to fit it.

if you take it easy it may last a little while - forfours tend to have issues with the semi autos but the manual clutches are quite good.

I would guess that you may have to ask the question on www.forfourowner.co.uk or forfour.co.uk

A guess would be £100-£140 for a clutch plate and perhaps £300 to fit, paying a garage to do it but I've only driven Forfours, never worked on one.

More like £600 as it's dual-mass on the cdi. A petrol might be cheaper. Worth going to a Mitsubishi dealership as well?

The cost of a clutch (all 3 pieces...pressure plate, driven plate, and thrust race) can be bought cheaper from Smart/MB than some peeps are currently advertising on ebay.co.uk ! ! Honest...
I'd ask at your local Smart/MB for a cost.....then depending on where you're located I'd also ask an independent Smart specialist to quote you on supply n fit. Then compare the 2.
If you let us know roughly where you are based then I'm sure you'll get some suggestions for a good 'indie'.

Just spoke to the smart dealership and its about £90 (no doubt plus vat) for the clutch plate and the same for the pressure plate. Didnt get a figure for the bearing!

Looks like i will be doing it my self then, no way am i giving smart £300!!

and yes my clutch is slipping considerably more, although i am still baffled as to how a clutch can be knackered by 50k on a semi auto car. Either my cars been clocked or the semi-auto boxes are shite!

If you're good mechanically then you could save £300 by doing it yourself. If not then you'll wish you had spent it at MB.

The semi-auto is an AMT.....an Automatted Manual Transmission....so it's a manual gearbox with an automatted clutch operated by an actuator.
And the actuator has to be set up properly on a Star machine as the closest you will get is a very rough adjustment by doing it manually.
That could be 1 of possible 2 reasons why the original clutch was/is slipping.....
1/ the actuator has not been adjusted or set up properly on a Star machine.....OR.....
2/ the car has been used on a great many short stop start journeys for most of it's life.

It may be worth getting the clutch taught again first before you replace it all......

May solve your slipping (but may not)

I would say get it done by an independent. I know a few people have had issues after a clutch change from non smart garages.
