  • Grinding sound?

    Hello everyone

Purchased a used 04 forfour last week. Had a high-ish mileage and lack of history, so I've taken it for an inspection at my local garage and a visual inspection at the smart dealership. They both said apart from the clutch being a little low and a loose heatshield, they cant find anything wrong.

    A few questions though:

    - The heatshield on the backbox is so loose it fell off. I need a new one but smart want to fit it themselves for £80. I'd prefer the new shield and nuts to do it myself instead of paying inflated dealership costs, where can I pick it up, if smart wont be helpful and sell me just the kit?

    - Browsing the internet about the driver door close, as it seems to be a common issue, but if anyone wanted to guide me to the most useful thread with pics to sort the driver handle issue I'd be grateful as it would save hunting for a good/useful thread. During hot weather or randomly, the door will bounce and not latch.

    - Planning to get the gearbox and engine oil changed at my local garage, but they don't know how to reset the service indicator and neither do I? How do you do this as I can only find instructions for the fortwo?

    - The final issue is a bit of a mystery. When pulling away, especially at lower revs and speed, especially if turning a corner like from a junction, I can hear a graunching drum kinda noise from the nearside front. It sounds like a wheel bearing going, if someone knows that sound, I jacked it up and checked for play/noise on the wheels, nothing. The garage couldn't find anything wrong and no play underneath at all. Smart couldn't find anything wrong and when I asked if it was just a characteristic, shrugged/almost nodded. It seems like an odd noise though and even if nothing is wrong, I would be intrigued in knowing what is causing the issue? Anyone heard of this one before?

Heat shield - goto their parts desk order heatshield and nuts etc - ta da!

Grinding, probably just the pad rubbing on your disks, take pads out and inspect clean caliper runners of dust and crud.

Why not contact ProblemChild via PM re 44 as he is a 44 fan

Yea after the visual inspection at my local dealership, the guy was insisting they fitted it. I might have to call when he isn't there or try another dealership.

Thanks, I didn't even think of that. I was more worried about the gearbox or wheel bearings.

Thank you, I will do that. Hard to find forfour fans as most people like the roadsters or fortwos.

Tbh - unless you can pick up the part cheap, I wouldn't worry about the heat shield

Grinding could be brakes binding, could be bearing, could be CV joint with some dirt in...

There is a full guide on the door handle/cable on the site Lali posted
