  • Restoring your knob...

well the leather on my BRAB forfour knob has been wearing a bit thin but recently it has started to get to me ..

so i bought a leather repair kit off ebay for about £10 which supposedly comes with a leather "filler"

    this is what you get...

(backing patch, filler, spatula to apply)

so i started to apply the filler...

straight away i thought that it was looking **** so i scrapped that idea straight away.

off came the knob, popped off the top cap with the gear layout on (its double sided taped)

removed the very thin remaining leather...

and (eventually) realised that the top half of the knob screws off..... (i made a bit of a mess of it trying to pop it off - oops)

so DON'T do it like this...

    UNSCREW it like this...

and using a 2" x 2" square of 3M carbon film i had and the missus hair dryer i wrapped it....

This was really hard and because the contour is so small, i must have stretched the 3M film by twice the original size in places just to try and remove the creases.

Its not great but its a start...

(may buy an A4 sample of the graphite 3M and just get it done properly)

and to finish off i took the easy approach for renewing the numbers/writing on the top...

this is what it was looking like...

so i got my trusty sharpie permanent marker, some spit and a bit of kitchen roll.

colour in 1 character at a time...

leave for about 5 seconds and then rub off with spit and kitchen roll...

repeat for all numbers, lines, dashes etc

    finished article...

    time taken...... about 5mins

Great little restore job certainly looks great and far cheaper than a new one

Looking good, you obviously rub your knob too much...
