  • A little peeved!!!

Found a forfour for my dad but it was in Blackburn (190miles from me) so after a long chat with the seller on the phone and him reiterating what it said in the advert (mint inside and out) and stating it was an 8 out of 10 but he was only saying that to cover himself because he was sure there wasn't a mark on it, I decided to put a deposit down and went up to get it today.......

410 mile round trip and 9 hours plus £60 fuel, and 2 train journeys for my dad - what a fkin waste of my life!!

Please no one go and waste their time with this car. To say that it is mint inside and out is an outright falesy!! The trid in front of the rear wheels looks like its been sand blasted, there are numerous dents in the trid panel behind the rear door, the drivers seat is torn to pieces on the bolster and both front seats are snagged beyond repair. The red interior is filthy, the interior carpet is thread bare and has been cut between the gear surround and the dash that was rivetted to the tunnel. There was no wiper arm on the passenger side. The windscreen was scratched. There was a large scrape on the rear drivers wheel arch down to the white plastic. Almost every panel had a scratch on it. The rear panel under the boot was very scraped. The boot wouldn't open. The key was trashed and after one open wouldn't work again. The spare key had no buttons and the internals rattled. The full instruction pack was there minus the service shedule. The mot certificate was done the day before and signed by the not station across the road and had no advisories (even though the guy said last week that the brakes were flagged up and thus replaced - they weren't) and there was no emissions print outs. And the v5c was torn in 2 parts and given they said they had just received it then it all smelt fishy

Why do people lie about the standard of cars - did they think I would just agree to the sale??

I should think you were peeved - it's a sad fact of life that some people seem to delight in wasting your time!!

Maybe, in hindsight, you should have got him to send you some detailed photos before commiting to the journey.

I was lucky when I went to N Wales for mine - exactly as described - only the steering seems stiff to me.

Could do with someone else to try it to confirm if it's faulty.

I'd be interested to know what the reaction of the seller was when confronted with all of this? I'd personally be pushing for reimbursement of costs.

I had a similar problem (on a much smaller scale) when I travellerd 80-odd miles to collect a storage heater which wasn't remotely like the thing I'd bid on on ebay - not the one in the photo, described as 3 years old and when I got there it was one that they stopped making 15 yrs ago etc.

After a massive row I managed to get them to pay me £30 to cover my fuel.
Small victory but if i'd ascertained what you did about this car, I'd be looking for minimum of reimbursement of all the train fares.

i bought a smart cabrio a few years back on ebay , asked loads of questions and was happy as it was gonna be a project , everything was good apart from the engine .
i turned up there to give them a deposit and nearly died , was the most knackered car i have ever seen in my life , broken roof , smashed windscreen and damaged tridion where they had tried to hack saw out the screen , split rear window , had aqua panels and everyone was smashed after being told they was all in immaculate condition , then i opened the door which dropped 6 inches and the smell almost made me collapse cause their great dane had been living in it for the last couple of years and had eaten the interior ! hence i didnt buy it

                Re: A little peeved!!!

Interesting to read this. A friend of mine showed me this car on Autotrader and I thought it looked really nice. Just goes to show how misleading pics could be.

I know it's probably a flawed idea but this i why I never like to look too far away for a car. I like to be able to easily get back and forth to look at it.

Hope you get something back from this Problemchild!

                    Re: A little peeved!!!

Not yet - am waiting until Monday to see if my deposit is transferred back to my account but then I will be.

Maybe I am just too mistrusting but I'm not stupid and if someone says a car is mint, I don't actually expect it to be in showroom condition but I do expect it to be nice.... and not a shed

Have my eye on a few others too so not overly worried.

i know its far to late to mention it, but you can see a wiper arm/blade is missing in the pictures, what a tit to try and sell it as mint, did he make excuses about all the faults????

                        Re: A little peeved!!!

Yeah - I can see that now I'm actually looking for it

I was concentrating on the bodywork mainly and I could see a slight ding on the rear wing and I had dug out some red vinyl to make up some ad hoc stone chip protectors but this was far from nice.

Some of the things I could hae sorted so easily but as a whole, the car just didn't make sense. It was trashed!! Mint and 57k miles and looking that bad just was crazy!

Got my eye on 2 more so not worried - just peeved

                          Re: A little peeved!!!

I picked my smart up on a 250 mile round trip, that was described as perfect as well. But the interior was a bit shabbier than I expected and the clutch was a little low. But I negotiated a good price beforehand.

A bit late now PC, but I wish you had told me, I would have been happy to inspect it for you and report back. Could we arrange a check-out option for cars?

If anyone needs me to check out a car in Lancashire, so long as you cover my petrol, I'd be happy to take time out to go and inspect it for you, take honest pics, etc.

What a great idea, informed, neutral, inspectors with an eye out for the potential buyer. Gets my vote. If Someone had offered to take a look for me when I bought my roadie( 4 1/2 hrs drive away !!) , I would have taken them up on the offer just for some peace if mind. I had a lengthy phonecall and good pics to go on however my seller was bang on with his assessment of his car and I was/still am very happy with the purchase. There are some genuine sellers out there but you never can tell until you meet them face to face.

WH666's offer of a viewing partner goes for me too. North Derbyshire / South Yorkshire area.

Hi been reading this - just supporting what has been said - I have another car in another forum as well and we offer the same "service" of a pre inspection. It can been good fun as you are acting as a possible agent so you can ask all the questions some may not ask or think of at the time as you may be under pressure to buy the car. I live in Stevenage Herts so any help I will be more than happy to cast my eye over a car from an objective point of view.
