  • Noise and slight vibration from the front of the car.

Hi i currently have a a problem with my car.
It drives fine but i have like a whirring sort of sound that is causing a very slight virbation down the drivers side of the car.
it appears to be more prevalent at about 30-40mph. and sounds a little like a washing machine lol like a wooom wooom woom noise if that makes sence?

I think it could be either a bearing a buckled alloy or possibly the tracking is very slightly off?

    Any ideas would be great.

    Thanks.

Sounds to me like a possible wheel bearing issue.

Firstly, check the basics..... wheel nuts done up tight, tyres inflated to correct pressures (look inside fuel flap) and tyre tread ok.

If its noisier going around corners then even more possible its a bearing.

What are your revs every time it happens?

Have you put it on axle stands and given the wheels a good twist top to bottom to see if there is any play, also depending on how long it has been doing it look for uneven wear on the tyres.

          Hi guys,

First of all thanks for the swift replys as always.

I took the car to my local garage this morning and they have advised that it is the drivers side wheel bearing that needs replacing.

They have quoted me including labour and vat for a genuine part £400+ and for a non genuine part and fitting £218.

Does anyone know the part number?

          Mine is a forfour 1.5 68bhp diesil.

I had to replace a wheel bearing on the rear passengers side a few years ago and the part from smart direct was £90+ (about £95 i think if i dig the recipt out).

          Thanks.

try mitsubishi for the wheel bearing, the colt (of the same year) has the same bearing/hub assembly and if i recall the volvo s40 (around 98MY) is the same aswell

The issue is that you had to buy the whole front hub and you can't just replace the bearing (easily)

Mitsubishi for the cz cars of the same age or try a breakers yard (most come with a 3 month warranty)

It may be that the non oem ones are the ones supplied to smart anyway - make sure if you do go for non smart that its a reputable make.

I would ring someone one like rob @ s2smarts for a quote too but I would expect £250 - £300 (it's quite a big job)

Part numbers..... You may need to check they are the correct ones for the cdi but I can only find 1 set of numbers (only checked for 2mins)

                  A 454 330 01 20 Front Wheel bearing - complete hub carrier LEFT
                  A 454 330 02 20 Front Wheel bearing - complete hub carrier RIGHT

                        Hi guys,

After making enquiries it appears that smart only sell for the front of the car the bearing the hub and the knuckle as a set. The price i got from Smart of Newcastle was £270 inc vat (and thats at a discounted rate!).

Non smart parts you can but just the replacement bearing for £99 ish. Due to the age of the car now and its value i have opted for the cheaper part.

Ill keep you posted how it goes.

Thanks again for all your replies.

Maybe the stub axle on the steering knuckle gets damaged with bad enough bearing wear?

So how went the replacement ?
From what I can gather you can't just replace the bearing as you need specialist equipment to remove it, but more importantly a massively powerful press to put the new bearing on with... which is why I think MB sell it as a complete unit.
