I wouldn't bother. It will only cause confusion for whoever will be servicing it.

It will be me servicing it!
I used to service all my smarts in the past.

You'd know what to do with it then! Many mechanics just want a paper element to replace.
The jury I think is out on the benefits of aftermarket performance filters and with some talk of them being less good at filtration - I'm not sure I'd recommend one.

Others will disagree - just wait and see!

iv got a 1.1 and use the original filter. no point in using the 'fancy' filters in my mind as they are more hassle than they are worth.

I pretty much disagree with all the above.

The filtration (and clogging of) can be more predictable with a foam panel.

It frees up the air flow to a degree (and although not necessarily much performance gain, the throttling of the engine through the air box is minimised)

It's easy to fit and maintain (wash and dry) and reusable over a number of years so quite cost effective.

I have an induction kit - the merc service guys don't get confused.

You get a better sound also

I can't think of any -ves apart from initial outlay.

The development/tooling for this one was paid for by smartmods

              Support your smart specific modifier

My dad has one fitted in his 1.3 and it sounds lovely

It has been shown on dyno tests that fitting a performance air filter with no other mods actually results in lower bhp.

I'd say its only worth doing if you plan to remap afterwards.

I'm not familiar with this research, would love to see a link, seems counter intuitive as easier breathing almost always results in bhp gain even if some throttle response is lost.

                  Cheers!

                    Re: Itg air filter?

Performance air filter means more noise, poorer filtration, reduced power and labour intensive cleaning. See my thread titled "450 Inlet Duct Losses" for details.
                    Just Google https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=45...hrome&ie=UTF-8

There is a conclusion towards the end of above thread:
This proves the air inlet duct system is extremely efficient with negligible losses. Any tampering such as replacing TIK pipe for a larger one, replacing air filter for a substandard free flowing filter (whether old fashioned cotton or more modern foam) or replacing charge air cooler for an expensive aftermarket unit etc etc will most likely make the system less efficient, provide poorer filtration and result in reduced performance.

Ask your self why more noise? Wonder if it is anything like the increased noise of a free flowing exhaust? Poorer filtration? my cylinders with almost no wear and original honing after 50k of use say otherwise. If the TIK is so perfect for every application why do Smart have 3 versions for the 450?

                      Cheers!

                        Different engines and turbos.
Turbocharger performance and life are adversely affected if the appropriate air intake TIK pipe matched to the turbo is not used. TIK pipe is designed to provide proper air flow pattern ahead of the turbocharger. "Upgrading" to a larger bore or one of these poorly made silicon TIK pipes is therefore not advisable. Free flow air filters will probably increase the losses.

lol, my my fortwo with original 61hp engine making 125hp said otherwise! Putting a larger/silicone TIK on a stock engine with no enhancements or mapping may well be a waste of time, but if you want to pump things up you MUST upgrade it too.

                          Cheers!

Inlet duct losses in the stock system are negligible. My 450 Cdi running flat out only looses 0.08 HP in inlet duct before turbo. Yours will be similar.

The CDI is a different animal, what is the difference in cfm between the two at redline (6500 on mine)? You speak of things that you have no practical experience of.

                              Cheers!
