      Reverse gear?

If this is so common with forfours i would imagine that its either a poorly designed or made gearbox or just a characteristic, something you just have to live with and work around so it doesn't crunch. It wont be doing the gearbox any favours but i suspect there isn't much you can do.
I wouldn't imagine changing the oil would affect anything in this respect and crunching the reverse would still have the same negative effect. As long as the oil level is at the correct level and is lubricating as it should there shouldn't be any need to change it.

Just my 10 pence worth, doesn't mean you shouldn't change it or wouldn't make a difference, I'm no expert!

        Hi

Mine does this occasionally too, It is common the these cars as my old Mitsubishi Colt Mirage did the exact same thing. You just get used to it and i just dip the clutch or change to 1st while stationary then reverse.

Changing oil will do jack **** to the crunch. Of course you can drain the oil, filter it and put it back. Gear oils never get tired, only contaminated so filtering is quite OK. The worst that can happen to the oil is water ingress. In that case there is not much option but changing, especially if there is salt water ingress. Fresh water can be boiled off and the oil will be good like new.
