I picked up my fortwo last Monday and I've just checked the tyres - this set up any good ? Yokohama used a lot ?

Front A539(I think) Yokohama 175/50/R16
Rear A520 Yokohama 205/45/R16

not sure about mpg as I haven't had it long enough but never realised there would be a difference between steeel and alloys ! Shows how much I know !

I'm never keen on having different tyres on front and rear to be honest. I would rather have the same all round so i know the cars print on the road is the same.

Just like i always change tyres in 2's or 4's

I'm sure your set up is ok.

I've got sportline alloys 175/55/r15 rear and 145/65/r15 on the front. Has anyone experienced the 175/55/r15 all round setup? Do you need spacers on the front for the extra width?

I forgot to mention I have Monoblock VI Alloys ! Don't know if that makes a difference!

That setup will be fine in the dry. Just watch out in the wet. Yoko's are notoriously bad in the wet and for2's are very tail happy if you push them too far- once you lose the back end in the wet- you'll be lucky to get it back!

For all around i'd recomend toyos or rainsports - can't remeber who makes them, i think its pirreli.

Remember : 2.5m of smart + 1 Turbo = Hedge seeking missile!
But: 2.5m of smart + 1 turbo + 1 wet road + 1 handful of wet road understeer = 1 next of kin in tears.

The Yokohama set up mentioned:
Front A539(I think) Yokohama 175/50/R16

is the same as my 4-2 Nightrun Brabus (Factory fit I expect!)

It is a bit slippery on the back, but the tread tho still legal is not as deep as I would like (fun tho!)

My rears are getting replaced by Smart Liverpool as part of the deal when I bought it, however you cannot buy the A520's anymore.

After speaking to Yokohama HO, Milton Keynes, who seemed very clued up about Smart cars, they suggested that their Parada Spec 2 are the best match, specification and performance wise, for the old A520 and A539 still on the front.

I will let you know how I get on, if Liverpool ever get their asses into gear!!

im running 195/45/15 Ft and 195/50/15 R on this smarty but dosent seem to handle aswell as the old 1 which was 175F 195R new car has wheel spacers on thow

Liverpool Smart sorted my tyres out today.

Now Front A539 Yokohama 175/50/R16
Back Parada Spec 2 Yokohama 205/45/R16

They are certainly more grippy than the A520, thats even before they are bedded in!!

Asthetically they match patterns better as well (front to rear)

munk rainsport is just uniroyal rainsports. Pirreli I hate with a passion, i blame the p zero's for writting off my first fortwo! It was like driving on ice, also why else do you think anyone driving on pirreli in the wrc didnt do well, and now there not in the sport at all haha

Ive still got my Adikt Type E 16's from my old fortwo running 195/40/16 all round which I really liked (great handling, but a bit of a hard ride). I like the look of the Corelines but I'm still undersidded if I should put them back on..I still don't know whether the 3-5 stud converters are going to bugger up my bearings....when I took them off after 3 years one of the bearings was on its way out

I believe Corelines are Front 5' Rear 6.5'

Great info but unfortunately i dont understand much of it!!!
I'm a complete novice with cars so the smart is a different story all together

I've got standard tyres the rear 1s bigger than the front (dont have a clue what size) with starline alloys (i think). These arent too good on humps or holes in the road! Just wondering what i could do to make it a smoother ride?? Answers in layman terms please.

Yokohama A.Drives - what do you think?

Hello everyone, :newbie:

This is my first post on the Smart Maniacs' Forum, so I hope this goes well. :redface:

I have a 2002 SmartCar (ForTwo), and I'm currently coming up to changing tyres. In the rainy weather of Glasgow, I've not found the Continental EcoContacts to be particularly confidence-inspiring - particularly when Hercules (my Smart ) is driven hard, so I'm looking for an upgrade in grip levels. Tyre longevity is not high on the list of requirements, as I tend to find myself replacing tyres due to punctures long before the tread wears out (gotta love rear wheel drive for protecting tread! ).

I'd like to get the same type of tyre all round (with matching treads), but am keen to keep the manufacturer-specified sizes to avoid the complications of explaining tyre equivalence to the insurance company.

After doing some internet searching, I've found that Yokohama A.Drive tyres are available in both the OEM 175/55/R15 (rear) and 145/65/R15 (front) sizes and the Yokohama website is full of glorious promises of motoring excellence with them fitted - but I'm keen to see if SmartMen and SmartWomen who are much wiser than me have any experience with them. So... over to you.

I recommend that if you change you go for four tyres of the same type -

Have you tried the Cointinental premium Contact - you get decent grip (wet and dry) with those - or alternatively Toyo Proxes T1-Rs. You will have to change all four if going the Toyo route as they don't mix well with Continentals. Check on a tyre site (http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html) for comparable sizes and then check with the manufacturer that the trye width will fit on your rims) and go for the largest maximum size you can get away with. For example a 5J tyre will accept from about 165 to 185 tyres but not 195s, which is a bummer as the 195/50 15 can be bought for much less (a third) than the comparable 185/55 15!

There will be lots of opinions - but go for what you can afford - and try find a decent tyre that scores 4 or more both wet and dry in reviews.

Also, if available in your area I recommend event-tyres.co.uk for an excellent mobile service.
