  • Making smart quiet[er]

    Hi

I was wondering did anyone here try any mods to make their smart fortwo/citycoupe quieter? Is it even possible, or how much is possible anyway? Are some smarts quieter than others? I reckon some of the wind noise will never go away though...

    target areas:
    wind (doors)
    wind (a-bar, driver window edge?)
    tyres or wheelarches
    engine (if auto gearbox)
    firewall (?)

I think you'd be fighting a bit of a loosing battle. I too thought the car was a bit on the noisy side at first. But having pulled various parts of the car apart while fitting numerous bits & pieces, i've found that there is quite a bit of sound insulation inside the car already. I doubt adding more is going to do a whole lot. You may be able to fit a bit into the door panels, and front bulkhead, but again, I don't think it would make a big enough difference to justify the effort.
Being such a small car, you inevitably sit very close to everything that noise typically comes from, so you are bound to hear it more than you might compared to other cars.
If your car has the standard stereo system, particularly with standard thumbnail sized crappy speakers, then you wont be playing anything through it at any decent level, so again you will hear all the other noises the car makes that much more. So, fit better speakers (with the bass bins). And preferably upgrade the rest of the stereo system too. It really made general Smart car type noises far less apparent for me with my ForTwo.

Best way tio make it a little quiter is fill the back of the car with something. We use luggage when we go away and it works well

        I don't know why, but Sue's Mk6 is quieter than my Mk5!!!
The only differance is hers has velour mats & mine has rubber mats, inside. I've had a good look around at the sound proofing & they both seem identicle.
The front ends are slightly different designs & my Mk5 has mud flaps. Could that make the differance in noise?

I sound insulated my last roadster to cut down engine compartment noise, by covering the rear bulkhead and the boot, maybe this writeup could be utilised to do a similar thing to your Fortwo.

Roll of Avonway soundproof (heat resistant) felt from local car part stockists, or....

Diesels usually have more soundproofing than a petrol in most cars, does the Smart CDI have more or thicker soundproofing than the petrol Smart?

strip out all the carpets and tune like crazy, then just into your mothers standard fortwo, and then it'll sound quiet. Try it, its impressive! lol
