  • ESP light on - loss of power

A strange one! Under hard acceleration from about 30mph the power just failed and the ESP light (the orange one with a triangle in the middle) came on. I pulled over and moved the gear lever to neutral. Tickover was pulsing about every second but did not stall. Engaged drive again and tried to pull away but pulsing continued, producing kangeroo effect! Switched off and waited a few seconds, started again and all back to normal.

    Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the suggestion but I have just checked the level of the brake fluid and it is spot on.

Re: ESP light on - loss of power

Hi, I had the same kinda problem during the summer months, I own a 02 pulse and was traveling round the Heathrow section of the M25 in the fast-lane, and the warning triangle came on with instant loss of power! I managed to coast over to the hard shoulder and switched the car off. After a minute or so (chance for my sphincter to recover) I switched the car back on again and managed to get off the motorway before the warning-triangle cut in again approx 2miles down the road.

Following day (1st step before checking/replacing any parts) I scanned my car for error codes using a £30 scanner I got off Fleebay (or you can get this done prossesionally for around £20-£30) either option will hopefully tell you what the problem is. I my case I was getting a P0105 error code which relates to: MAP/Barometric circuit malfunction.

After a trawl of the internerd and a quick scan of a Fleebay workshop manual I located/replaced the offending MAP sensor, had the car proffesionally scanned/reset/scoped/checked and the job was a good'un!

            Scanner £30 + P&P
            Bosch Sensor £88inc
Proffessional scan (after fitting sensor) £25inc

I was quoted (from memory) £70+ p/h by MB/Smart Lakeside as an hourly fault finding charge. This is before any parts are fitted!

Basically, what I am "advising" (from experience) Is to get your car scanned first, this will hopefully give you some idea or indication of any problem(s) or issues, as most electrical items have there own generic fault codes THEN when you know wots-wot, you can set about fixing it or getting it fixed.

Who knows it might save you £££'s and a lot of frustration/wasted effort in the long run.

Now my turn, whilst people are hopefully reading this....

My 02 pulse has intermitent starting problems, every now'n'then you go to start the car, all the dash lights come on but the starter-motor just clicks! If you put it in gear and rock the car (in gear) till you hear the bleeping and get an "0" displayed on the dash, turn the ignition off lock/un-lock the car and try again, it does so. At No time have I ever had the 3-bars dispalyed on the dash whilst this problem is occuring, battery is new (Bosch) and the connections are ok/checked.

Could this be (a) worn-out starter motor or (b) this gearbox actuator thingymajig that needs cleaning etc ???

Hope I have been of some help......... Happy Xmas & a Merry New Year to all.

            Wobbert.

Thanks for the feedback. I am having the error codes checked at Wellsmart after Christmas so will hopefully have some idea what the problem is.

This thread: http://www.smartmaniacs.co.uk/forums...hlight=pulsing illustrates almost indentical problem. I will, however, wait to see the fault codes before replacing anything.

I had similar on Bumble, theres an air pressure sensor - http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php...&men=servicing underneath the bo of turbo. If its broken the car plays up - disconnect it and it runs normally.

Mine did a bit of ESP light flashing yesterday too. It's never happened before and the car has just been serviced. Was going to ask about this on this forum when I saw this thread.

So, did anyone get to the bottom of it?
                      Muchly thanks x

Re: ESP light on - loss of power

If it was just a couple flashes of the ESP then it was most likely the ESP doing it's job. The roads are slippy at the moment and if the wheels spin the ESP will flash.

If your ESP is coming on and staying on and the car is losing power until you restart the engine then that is a problem.

This is exactly what happened to me and Wellsmart are checking me on Saturday 29 December!

On Friday my reluctor rings were replaced which we believed was causing the problem as both were split. I drove 30 miles home and it drove beautifully, 1 mile into my journey on Saturday and it did exactly what you described again so its going back to work out what else is a problem.

                            Thanks for Wellsmart!

That's good for me then - if they can fix yours then they should be able to sort mine too!

Let us know how you get on on Saturday.
