On Friday my reluctor rings were replaced which we believed was causing the problem as both were split. I drove 30 miles home and it drove beautifully, 1 mile into my journey on Saturday and it did exactly what you described again so its going back to work out what else is a problem.
Wellsmart diagnosed the problem and had to replace the mass absolute pressure sensor (MAP).

Doh! I broke down on my way to work with the same fault again! I've done 160 miles since Paul replaced the sensor so I was really hopeful. I'm going to call this morning and see if they can fit me in on Saturday (fingers crossed!).

Every time the fault has occured, it has been whilst the engine temperate is cold. I wonder if there is a connection?

No thrashing whilst cold, generally no thrashing at all, trying to get the best MPG of all time so driving very sedately!

I'm booked in at wellsmart for Saturday.

Any updates at all? Did you go back and get it sorted? What was the problem?

The problem is loss of power, engine light stays on, esp light comes on after accel hits 3,000 rpm then complete loss of power with idle jumping none stop.

                    Any idea?.

Re: ESP light on - loss of power

Engine light coming on is 'Safe Mode' where the engines ECU has detected a problem and restricts performance to try and protect itself.
You positive it's the engine light ?
Having the ESP light coming on too is a bit peculiar though which I'll ignore just now.

If the engine isn't idling that smoothly, then it's misfiring for one reason or another.
                      when was it last serviced?
have you had the fault codes read yet ?
have you had the spark plugs out to confirm condition?
How old and how many miles on the clock ?

lastly is your car a roadster or a fortwo smart ?

Basically, what I am "advising" (from experience) Is to get your car scanned first, this will hopefully give you some idea or indication of any problem(s) or issues, as most electrical items have there own generic fault codes THEN when you know wots-wot, you can set about fixing it or getting it fixed.

Who knows it might save you £££'s and a lot of frustration/wasted effort in the long run.

Now my turn, whilst people are hopefully reading this....

My 02 pulse has intermitent starting problems, every now'n'then you go to start the car, all the dash lights come on but the starter-motor just clicks! If you put it in gear and rock the car (in gear) till you hear the bleeping and get an "0" displayed on the dash, turn the ignition off lock/un-lock the car and try again, it does so. At No time have I ever had the 3-bars dispalyed on the dash whilst this problem is occuring, battery is new (Bosch) and the connections are ok/checked.

Could this be (a) worn-out starter motor or (b) this gearbox actuator thingymajig that needs cleaning etc ???

Hope I have been of some help......... Happy Xmas & a Merry New Year to all.

                        Wobbert.
just quick, my mum had this problem, tried all of this and nothing fixed it, smart of maidstone couldn't replicate the fault, so wouldn't touch it, took it to CF, they took a guess it was the starter motor, so the old hit it trick when it didn't wanna start, and worked a treat every time, took it back up, and they replaced the motor in tea-breaks just charged for part, and her lil old smartie is still driving round today.

                        Natasha:

sorry i cant help with the safe mode problem! never come across it, would say go for a plug in atleast!

Re: ESP light on - loss of power

                          Hi,

I had a very similar problem a while back, was joining a motorway up a hill and had to put more load on the engine that normal.

Anyway the car lost power, orange light came on, and it was running rough.

It had shut down a cylinder. Turn off and on and all well again but if you revved it it would go again, OK in normal driving.

Had the faults read and they basically said nothing of much use according to the garage. Tied this into recent spark plug changes, garage took another look and one of the HT leads had been nicked, changed and all well.

Best to get the codes read first, but if you can take a look at the HT leads it's worth a shot. Similarly if you are in a position to check the plugs too I'd do that as well.

Reading the previous posts it could be many things hence the need to get the codes read first.

                          Good luck.
