  • Help needed to remove engine..

Hi guys first post so please take it easy :-)

I am following this guide http://www.fq101.co.uk on how to remove my engine. Now I'm just alittle unsure so thought I would ask in here to see if anyone could help.

I am nearly ready to drop it but I still need to disconnect the brake cable / fuel and water. I think thats all thats left to do. My smart is a 52 plate pulse. The brake line seems easy enough, it says in the guide a 15mm and 13mm but I dont think mine are either unless I'm looking at the wrong thing.

Does anyone have any advise or pic's that could point me in the right direction.

    Cheers

    Steve

    Hi,

I didn't work on the car in the guide that you have read but this might show you a detail of the connection to the rear brake drum:

All you need to do is disconnect the brake line to allow the rear subframe to come free.

For the brake lines where were you disconnecting from? We took it from under the n/s by the fuel tank. There's just one flex hose to disconnect as you have a Mk6. The rest of the hard lines to the drums come out with the subframe. ABS sensors connections are clipped on the same bracket as the brake line.

For handbrake the coupling is directly under the base of the handbrake (under the car, just above the subframe) You'll need to unhook the two cables
as the coupling splits from the one at the handbrake to cables for each drum.
Also put the handbrake all the way down to give you some slack.

The fuel lines we undid from the fuel rail (the two pipes going in from the other side of the fuel pressure regulator)

The water pipes should become more obvious when you start lowering the subframe from the chassis. Access to the other side of the engine improves as you drop it.

      Just some potted thoughts

Once you've got the car supported properly and you're ready for the final few pipes to disconnect, the brake pipe is easy to separate, but block it up with something to stop brake fluid going all over the place. Drain your coolant into a bucket from the three transfer pipes, there will be more water to come out from the front end later. There are three fuel pipes to disconnect, all quick release squeeze and pull. Don't forget the handbrake mechanism!! Once all that's done, support the handbrake end of the subframe with two axle stands and undo the four main retaining bolts to the chassis, then gently lower your jack (supported under the engine) and roll out. Simple!!

        Good luck fella.

take the engine out of the subframe, and leave the subframe in the car, fudge and i have just used that method and it's alot less messing than disconnecting all the brakes and stuff.
car on drive on ramps, take off turbo and other bits you can get to, then support the engine with a trolley jack (2 ideally)and undo the gearbox mount and other side engine mount and lower the engine a little(it will pivot on the front engine mount) then just undo the cables and pipes you see as you lower it abit each time, the last one to come out will be the connector at the bottom of the gearbox...double check everything has been disconnected then (you'll need an assistant) jack the engine up so it's level and undo the front mount (central one) and lower the whole unit down and out.......
when putting in back, do the gearbox mount and enigne mount first, that'll line up the front centre mount, then undo them and pivot the engine as before but connecting things as you go up (if you get what i mean!!)

Re: Help needed to remove engine..

Thanks guys for all your answers :-) they help loads. I am removing the engine as its missing and blowing a load of smoke out. I intend putting in a bike engine in it, but not one of the smartuki kits or what ever they are but a extreme smart kit which is in the development stage at the moment. I am on the lookout for a R1 or gsxr1000 2006 or newer. I will be linking in a autoshift upto the paddles / stick.

I only have left the brake line (already done hand brake), water , fuel. As I understand the water can be done once the engine has been lowered. The brake line I think is just one connection, does the abs sensor wires follow either side in the same bracket.. the g sensor wire ran down the same brackets.. ? (down the passangerside). The Fuel thingy, iI will look a little more.

the ABS sensors follow the same path, and are held in place with the same plastic clamp in front of the nearside rear wheel.
You'll only need to undo the brake union as it joins the flexi-hose, or if you prefer at the T join on the lower chassis tube.

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

Sounds interesting, are you gonna use the existing subframe? My previous car was ready for a bike engine, but I put a 1275 MG Metro engine in there instead!! Check out www.myspace.com/smart1275gt

Re: Help needed to remove engine..

Thanks guys all done. I did snap one of the plastic fuel things (last pic) but as I'm not using the engine then I'm not to bothered.. although it will bug me.. lol

I will be sticking the full engine / gearbox etc on fleabay later once I know what I need to keep. Everything went to plan and it total its taken me around 3 hours to remove it although I think I could do it in 2 or less now I've done my first. :-)

O here is the dev car..

:-) cant wait.. yes thats a hayabusa in there. but he needed to cut away the boot floor abit, thats why I am going for a r1 or gsxr so it will just fit in nice :-)

Nice looking kit and it uses the original De Dion tube as well!! That's the first one I've seen like that.

First right hand drive car I've seen converted as well.

                      Good luck.

Yeah I was quite impressed about it using a modified subframe rather than a new one. It should be a whole lot cheaper than the other kit thats about, thats just stupid money.

Cool, can't wait to see it running. Have you got a reverse gear motor sorted? How does the bodywork fit without the rear crash bar?

Hi m8, no reverse gear as yet. Thats something I'm looking into. Just a simple small electric motor that moves the car at 1mph would do. Its not made to go backwards.. lol . After abit of advice from you really. I need to firm the ride up loads to be honest, can you recommend which springs / shocks to go for ?

Body work fixes to the tridion above the crash bar & doesn't attach to the actual crash bar.
                              Nice project BTW.
