You're confusing it the new smart ((2007 onwards) all of them have 5 gears.
All the 698cc and 599cc smarts have six gears. including the roadies.

5 actually, 2 primary and 3 secondary

my 56 reg passion came without pods, it was about £150 to have them fitted/coded later if i remember correctly-they certainly add to the cars character

Ah, but the pre-2004 Passion DID come with pods and fogs. smart stripped them out on later models to save costs!

There are a lot of differences between the models over the years so it is impossible to list out all the individual items. However, I tend to think of them as follows:

Pure - Base Model
Pulse - Sporty
Passion - Luxury

btw, I have the pure version, no aircon, no pods, but I had a glass roof on it. It's 99 make, pure, with glass roof And when I retrofitted the pods, the revcounter did worked from the first time.
