Morning all I have a little problem that I cant seem to sort both my brake lights have stopped working but my high level one is still working. I have checked the bulbs both are fine as ais the fuse and this morning I changed the brake light switch but still nothing .......any ideas. I have a 2002 city cab and as a side point should there be an undertray on her as the how toos for the brake light switch say remove undertray but there was not one there ?
    Thanks in advance

How strange, a guy at my work place has the same problem with his BMW, high level works but no other brake lights. I assume its not just a smart thing. I can only guess that it must be a connection problem at the back somewhere after where the high level spurs off and before it spurs off for normal brake lights. I can say more than that as I haven't looked at the wiring on mine yet. Mine has a tray, they probably get damaged or left off, best to have one though as it stops all the crud getting up where you don't want it.

Have you changed any of the rear bulbs? As putting in the wrong bulb can cause brake light & other electrical shenanegans.
Could also be a bad earth.

I would test the brake light bulbs both sides - maybe co-incidence and they both blew around the same time?

Buy and fit the under trays! They are needed to keep the water and road rubbish off various electrical pieces under there and if not there will cause those units to go wrong, (Brake light switch- causing non start of engine)

As for brake lights not working. How good are you with a multimeter? You will nee to trace the wires back from the bulbs to see where the fault is. Wiring goes behind the nearside boot side cover.

It could also be the bulb holders which have melted the bottom to the point the plastic has been soft enough for the metal spring connection at the bottom to embed itself in and then go hard once the heat has been removed resulting in no lights.

Both mine went at pretty-much the same time. Not really surprising when you think that both are likely to have been fitted at the same time and both from the same batch.
