  • interior door handle/cable replacement help

    evening all, i have been looking or an idiots how to guide on how to go about reaplceing the interior drivers side door handle with no luck and was hoping one of you nice people may be able to help with this please.
    a while back the door couldnt be opended form either the inside or the outside after the exterior cable snagged. my dad managed to get the door to open for me, but ended up breaking the inner cable.
    i have bought the reaplacement part along with the interior handle but cant find anyting on how i go about replacing the old with the new. is someone able to give step by step or point me in the direction of a how to please.
    any help would be greatly appreciated.

    ps it is a smart fortwo, 2001, pure rhd

    i have allready looked on evilution and fq101 and there didnt seem to be anytying helpful there

    You will need to remove the outside door panel to get to the screw inorder to remover the inside door handle.

        Door card, outer door panel, outer door handle and lock case have to come off to replace interior door handle control cable.


        Above photo shows left hand side door on my Smart 450. Lock case, outer door handle and outer door panel removed. Control cable for interior door handle can be seen above and slightly to the right of the electrical connectors.

        To reduce chance of door panel cracking up, I recommend you warm the panel with a hair dryer before removing especially if below room temperature.

        I placed a guide for this operation on one of the forums a while ago but can't remember where.

        Here are some self-explanatory photos:


        Interior door handle. Ready to feed control cable into handle.


        Interior door handle. Outer housing of control cable has been fed into handle.


        LHS door shown without panel. Screw that holds inner door handle is just aft of forward window stop.


        LHS lock case. I believe the interior door cable attaches to the lever that has the blue spring.
