Double DIN radio thingy for a 450 ?

Hi there,

Can anyone point me at an online shop that sells the kits to put a double DIN radio into a 2006 Smart ? The multitude I see on ebay seem to be for the 451.

Don't recall ever seeing one for a 450.

The 2-din conversions I have seen in 450's (I can easily count them on one hand) have all been DIY jobs.

I have seen one, and that was a long time ago, I think it may have been made especially for whose ever car it was. There isnt an off the shelf one that I have seen, the best place to look would be some of the German specialists as I have noticed several little things that Ive not seen elsewhere.

However that said, the radio and drawer section of the centre console is curved, not only across but also downwards as well, so getting something to fit properly would be a difficult task. I contemplated seeing if I could fit a double DIN system but for the reason above I decided not to and went with a single DIN.

If you are looking for SatNav or a larger screen in the smart then you may want to consider one of the head units that have a screen that slides out and then upwards. They have a larger screen and I think they even do SatNav. Have a look at what Kenwood have in their range.

Nice find ckCDi!!! so I was right one of the German specialists do do one A bit pricey though! At 99 euros for a bit of plastic and its not even the right colour as either the blue or grey interior.

And you still have to Hack your center console your self!! - So the fit would depend on how good you were with your cutting and filing!!

So if I go with a double DIN it'll require some hacking ? hmmmm .. was hoping for a drop in swap.

Single DIN unit might be the way to go then, I was hoping to go all bling and get an Android based radio with the big touch screen ... will see if there is a suitable single DIN type that slides out.

If you go down the flip up screen route, be aware that the screen might hit the indicator stalk as it fips.

How do I know? Because mine does!

Another downside of the flipscreen is that it covers the heater controls when flipped up.

If you shop around you might find a head unit that has a single din box housing all the electronics but which has a double din front which is offset downwards - I was looking at one such unit yesterday in Halfords.

how about a cheap android tablet running an audio app and also something like Aupeo! internet radio mounted to the side of your standard HU and use a nice £100 single HU as the "amp" side of things?

Im putting an old Samsung phone in the center air vents which has everything that problemchild mentioned but mine will connect to my JVC R90BT so everything will be incorporated and I get SATNav, Torque and internet radio and other things to boot.
