  • smart 450 gear problems

looking for some advice, my wifes 2002, 600cc smart has developed a intermittent fault with the gears, when starting from cold driving in auto the car is fine it goes up the gears , sometimes when you slow down to stop and try to set off again it seem the engines just revs and theres no drive as if the car is in neutral, however if you switch off and restart its fine again any ideas anyone?

Clutch actuator needs a 'service', gear position sensor can have damp problems, and the wiring to it and in the gearbox area can be chafed and intermittent..

Try sticking 'chafed' into this sites search and also on http://www.thesmartclub.com/board/ , should get you started on the job

I'm having the exact same problem. I notice you had this problem a couple months ago so probably got it fixed. Can you tell me what the problem was and how much it cost to get it fixed?

Seems like its becoming a recurrent fault with gearbox problems in 450's. I have already been out to look at 1 with a gearbox problem this week

They don't have the fastest gear changes but they shouldn't be especially slow at it either.

What you have described is a classic sign of a worn or badly adjusted clutch actuator. It's often ignored when the car gets serviced by anyone who is not fully competent to work on them.

Mercedes Smart dealers can also remap the gear change to make adele someone like you it smoother, but it's not cheap and unless the gearchanging is very jerky it's not really worth it I'm having the exact same problem. MB Dealer dont remap !
Is the clucht actuator still good ?

Get some new oil in the gearbox
            Adjust the clutch actuator
Then use a MB Star diagnostic computer, for recode the gearbox and reteach the slippoint of the clutch.

If it isnt helping , to fix the problem.
9 outta 10 it is the clutch or a worn clutch actuator.
