  • Intermittent Starting Problem

Hi I am having starting problems with my 2004 Fortwo .Usually starts with no issues at all even if it has been sitting over a week. But recently after I have been out, on a journey, and stop,(so engine is warm), sometimes it will not start again. The dash lights are all bright and the starter turns strongly, but will not fire. I have to sit for a while and try either rolling the car to try and start it or locking an unlocking it, to see if it resets itself. Then after anything up to 15 - 20 mins it starts, with the only noticeable thing being a smell of petrol, which goes away quickly. Anyone any ideas, apart from this the car runs great.

To push the diagnosis further, continue running as is and expect the engine to stop of its own accord (typically at idle at junction) and then being reluctant to restart for 20 mins (until the CPS has cooled).

If the starter motor is running but the engine isn't "catching" then it's CPS as above.
If the starter motor doesn't run then it's the motor itself, or more specifically the signal connection to the starter motor is likely dirty.

Thanks all I have now booked into a Smart car specialist with a probable CPS replacement.😁
