Steering Lock Stopped Working

My 2001 Smart Passion has just failed the Swedish equivalent of its MOT. For some unknown reason, the steering lock has stopped working. Any ideas if this is a quick fix or if I need to find a mechanic?
Any help would be really appreciated...

The Mk1 Smart For Two did not come with a steering lock. instead it has the ability to lock the gear lever in the reverse position. Park the car, select reverse, turn off the engine. Now you can not move the gear lever.
