      DVLA.

From that link, i'm not sure any smart can be classed as an auto.

It is proved by psychologists and other scientists who spend their life time researching different things like this that the automatic transmission is much safe then the manual.
The driving situations on the road sometimes are so difficult and unqexpectable, where your life depends on your reaction and the human mind just not able to keep everything in it is one moment of time physically and addition stick to move (not speaking about the 3rd pedal!) can cause very unpleasant situation.
The time of the horse carriages has gone!

im in a total dilemma. im so upset. im supposed to pay for the cat tommorrow , lastest monday..

i must admit the thingystick i have to move up to change gear has been on my mind but have been told its easy to get used to and will adapt to it

iv only been taught in a fully automatic never had to think about changing gear(which is the reason i chose to learn in auto plus i found it hard to coordinate my foot / clutch and gear)

my otherhalf even said (just now) great typical!)) its gone through his mind if im allowed to drive with a auto liecense..

smart of york said it was ok..

i just want a small car i feel safe in with a good transmission, i dont mind changing gear as iv heard its the best way to drive a smart?

          oh god.

I thought point (b) - " he is provided with such means but they do not include a clutch pedal or lever which he may operate manually" means that all fortwos and roadsters are "vehicle with automatic transmission" since there is no clutch pedal.

So they should be OK to drive on an automatic licence.

If you take a smart for your test you'll only get an auto licence

so the reverse applies - if you have an auto licence , you can drive a smartcar

Furthermore it only has two pedals, neither of which is the clutch.

              IMHO

Can you imagine a police officer who would think about if the girl in SMART plastic car is allowed to drive it or not with her license! She bought this car to avoid all this questions, isn't she?!
I'm sure, there will be no questions.... It has two pedals and it means that it is automatic and other specification and functions of the exact automatic transmission should not bother them...

By the way, here is an interesting article about the Smart car and cars in general, especially advice for beginning drivers....

By that definition the only autos that would qualify are those with rotary selectors such as the Jaguar XF.

The lever on an auto can be used to change down gears manually.

I understood that line to mean "he is provided with such means but they do not include a clutch pedal or [clutch] lever which he may operate manually" rather than a gear lever.

Its point (a) that would be disputed. (a) the driver is not provided with any means whereby he may vary the gear ratio between the engine and the road wheels independently of the accelerator and the brakes, or

In a smart we are provided with the means to vary the gear ratio..... independently of the accelerator and the brakes, by means of moving the lever up or down in tiptronic mode. I think that holding the gears into 3, 2, 1 on a conventional auto would probably not be classed as varying the ratio.

It would probably take THE most pedantic of police officers to enforce this, but I have read on Pistonheads of the aforementioned disabled Porsche driver who had his car confiscated over this. His thread was removed pending a court case and no further updates were given.

                          Re: transmission options ((help!!))

Porsche 'tiptronic' boxes are just regular auto boxes with software adapted shifts from the steering wheel. Porsche 996's use a Mercedes box.

Almost every conventional auto box has P R N D 3 2 1 or P R N D L, therefore you have the control over which gear ratio's to choose. So the Pistonheads story is an urban myth!

                          Therefore, I Disagree!

Good grief. 30 seconds of research by ANY owner will allow you to discover that your V5 form says that your car is an auto. End of story - the DVLA say you can only drive autos, they say that your car is an auto, nothing to discuss.

In the event you still want more guidance (the DVLA's own site is surprisingly short of it), the DSA's DT1 document issued to driving test examiners says (chapter 6, section 10, page 141):

                            SEMI-AUTOMATIC SYSTEMS

With these the driver has to select the gear required by movement of the gear lever
as with a manually controlled gearbox, but there is no clutch pedal. For driving test
and licensing purposes these vehicles are regarded as automatics.
If you don't regard that as definitive, I don't think I (or anyone else) can help you.

edit: just want to make it clear that none of this (mild) irritation is aimed at the OP, who doesn't HAVE a v5c to look at (though he presumably has google, which helped me turn up that document inside of ten minutes ).

                                simple way
                                2 pedals = auto
                                3 pedles = manual

smart fortwo, roadster and some forfours = 2 pedals = auto
                                smart forfour = 3 pedals = manual

                                simples... tisk
