In the event you still want more guidance (the DVLA's own site is surprisingly short of it), the DSA's DT1 document issued to driving test examiners says (chapter 6, section 10, page 141):

If you don't regard that as definitive, I don't think I (or anyone else) can help you.

edit: just want to make it clear that none of this (mild) irritation is aimed at the OP, who doesn't HAVE a v5c to look at (though he presumably has google, which helped me turn up that document inside of ten minutes ).

One thing that has not been mentioned to the prospective buyer here is that a new shaped fortwo has hill assist, which allows you to do a hill start like a true auto without a handbrake, because there is a less than a second delay on the brakes releasing, which prevents rollback.

Background: A smart Fortwo does have a clutch, so it will be effectively like a manual car on a hill start, and roll backwards if the handbrake is not used.

Smart brought in hill assist if I remember on 2004 plates onwards, so that the hand brake was not required on hill starts.

I dont have it on my Fortwo, and have to rely on a handbrake hill start :frown:

actually you can manually select gears on the XF and the new 5.0 litter XK ! they both have paddle shift as standard as will the all new XJ!
