  • 78.5 MPG Smart CDI

    Hi All,

I am new to the world of Smart so I thought I would share my first 2 weeks experience.

I previously owned a Citroen C5 tourer (new style) 2.0L Diesel, this is a lovely car and has served me well for over 2 years up and down the A3 to Guildford everyday from the south coast, but with a new baby and diesel prices rising, I passed on the C5 to my wife and looked for the cheapest car to own, settling on a 60 plate Smart CDi, passion, hard top, with 5000 miles on the clock, from Mercedes of Guildford on an Agility Finance.

First week was a bit of a write off as on day 2 I had the infamous power loss issue, a quick restart sorted it and got the car to the dealer who had it the whole week, they fitted the wiring mod and reseated the ERG? Sensor on a gromit to stop vibrations, fingers crossed this is now fixed, if not they can have the car back.

Second week I filled up to the brim on Saturday and Monday morning started the weekly commute Emsworth to Guildford 40 miles, 31ish on the A3. I have always been one of the faster drivers on the road not aggressive and never over 90. However a few weeks before I handed the C5 to my wife I noticed that trying to drive the A3 section of my commute as fast a safely possible only averaged 62mph! Sitting in the inside lane and relaxing, with the odd overtake of a truck or slow car 58mph! With this in mind I decided to enjoy the ride to work in the CDi, listening to the radio more and keeping with the flow of the traffic in the inside lane overtaking the odd truck etc, but never over 65mph for more than a few seconds, trying to keep the revs at a maximum of 2250 sometimes 2500.

I invested in the Torque app for my HTC and a Bluetooth OBD reader, however this was reading a disappointing average of 60mpg no matter how hard I tried to reduce it, I had some hope that the torque app needed calibrating and decided to continue my gentle commute, so come Friday (which been late and wanting get home to my wife and baby was a little faster drive than the rest of the week), when I got to the garage near home I was still on 2 dashes on the tank, I expected to have to put close to 30 litres in but was really chuffed that I only needed 23.5 (I even spilt some as I over filled!) that is 405 miles on 23.5 litres 78.5 mpg! I was getting 40-45mpg in the C5 so am saving close to £30 per week just on diesel.

I love the little car and at 67mpg the savings over the C5, now my wife is putting much less miles on the C5, would have covered its own lease cost (taking insurance, tyres and servicing into account) at 78 mpg we are saving money and my wife gets the bigger car she needs for baby stuff.

Sorry for the long first post I just wanted to show that steady driving can get you close to the mythical mpg.

    Simon.

    Hi Simon

Congrats on your new car and excellent mpg.

I'm in the hunt for improving the fuel economy on my 451 cdi and invested in a Scanguage to help me to understand what costs the car its precious mpg. I do 12 miles each way mainly on 40 - 50 mph roads and one junction of the M1, where like you I have found that it simply isn't worth attempting to push the loud pedal to hard (like it's got one .

The real killer for me is that to get to the M1 I have to pass through a really busy section of road at J21, I think it takes me through at least 12 sets of traffic lights and this ruins any chance of getting decent figures. Just wondering is your route traffic light, junction and roundabout light and do you drive in auto or use paddles? Happy motoring

      Impressive figures Simon!

You should sign up to Fuelly to keep a log of your mileage and mpg. I did so yesterday!

Also after filling up with fuel on Saturday, I've managed an average of 70mpg so far on my trip computer! Well chuffed! That's with careful driving, never more than 60mph, coasting into lower speed limit areas (rather than breaking hard at the last minute), and always accelerating gently. I've also fitted an after-market cruise control to waste as little fuel as possible (speeding up and slowing down unnecessarily) ... I too want to achieve that mythical mpg!

      All the best!

        Hi,

It is pretty much a straight run on my section of the A3 (now the tunnel is finished), I have one roundabout, which is never that busy. If I do hit traffic it is normally in Guildford. The A3 is quite hilly in places but I figure what goes up must come down, so what you lose on the way up, you gain by stepping off the pedal a little on the way down.

Hogster, I am of the belief that cruise control will lower your MPG rather than increase it, if you are paying attention to the road you will lift off slightly on a downward slope or when the traffic is building up in front of you, by watching the revs and the traffic there are times when you will let the car slow, or speed up a little. Cruise control is not clever and will do its best to keep the car at a set speed, be that up hill, down hill, approaching traffic etc. Just my thoughts I could be wrong!

        Simon.

If I want to get good MPG out of my SEAT I don't use cruise control, but use the speed limiter function instead.

That is consistent with what I found in my Citroen C5, speed limiter was much more useful than cruise control. I used to live in the US and cruise control was great there, as most people use it and the roads where not as busy as ours, in the UK you are constantly breaking to override it.

My latest tankful (number 68) only managed a miserable 63.3mpg but the roads have been pretty icy on my 15 mile hilly (2nd gear in places) commute. I don't think I'm ever going to see the dizzy heights of 78.5mpg as it's just too hilly round here.

I just press the cancel button to override it Also I partly bought the cruise control to give my foot a break!

                  Re: 78.5 MPG Smart CDI

I have managed to achieve 74.8 MPG in my 2nd full week, I let my wife borrow the car one evening and also had a few more sprinted drives home as I want to see what it felt like at faster speeds. So pretty chuffed with 74.8 MPG.

I think the 30 miles on the A3 is what is helping me, just steady up to 60-65 and feather touches to keep it there, if I get behind a truck I will sit there for a while at 56 until I can have a nice steady overtake, although last week I did try a few "floor it" overtakes.

The smart car does not get as warm as our big car, and it is a little slower to accelerate, but I really like the high driving position and it is good fun to drive, as an added bonus, I now know the locations of all the pot holes and road defects on my 80 mile round trip commute

I'm currently at 74.3mpg according to my trip computer, and that's after driving from Bedfordshire down to Guildford, around the New Forest for a weekend and back again .... very chuffed indeed!

                    David

PS. I only use cruise control where I know it isn't advantageous to manage the throttle myself, eg. on long level sections of road.

You all continue to impress, I managed 74mpg on my 5 mile trip back from the shops on Wednesday - if only I could maintain it over a whole tank but it's just not possible on my commute, I wish the Diesel did a stop-start motor it would make a big difference.

Averaging 74.3 mpg on each tank here Driving is a mixture of urban-ish driving and long distance driving at 50-60mph. I agree about hills though, they really knacker one's mpg!

Averaging 62 mpg on full tank over last 18mths - driving very conservatively with assistance of a Scanguage to optimise fuel use, winter/summer makes a big difference. Mines a 54bhp version by the way. What I find frustrating is that I've never owned a car where my driving has left me so far off from the published mpg returns, how do you guys manage it?
