  • Stop start technology, can it be disabled?

Hi guys, looking at a 451 to maybe own, and I see it has start/stop technology.

Is there a way of switching this off and on?

A button or a way of disabling it. If a button does it have to be pressed every journey?

The reason I do not like this technology is that it requires a lot of starter motor starts during a journey, at every red light, thus (in my opinion) wearing the starter out quicker compared to just start up engine an drive to the end of the journey.

Another quick question..It also has Auto door locking.

Can you disable auto door locking on the 451 (it locks automatically above 5 MPH), like I could in my previous Smart Roadster?

What is the procedure to do this, as door locking is not needed where I live, as we only get attacked on the road by deer and sheep

Search on here for mhd belt failure, then maybe consider a 451 with a different engine.

Auto locking can be turned off.

People have hard wired it off, but the starter motor would be the least of your worries with the MHD. Avoid at all costs.

Yes it has a buttonby the gear stick that switches it on & off - it does however revert back to 'On' when the engine is switched off & key removed, and no it can't be reprogrammed to be the other way round (not by Merc at least) as I have asked

Yes I think you can in much the same way as you can with the roadster although I haven't tried it. I have been tempted though as you have to pull the handle twice to open the door once its locked until like the roadster where you just pull the handle as normal...

Merc won't do it, but others have. I think NeilP may have posted about that.

Thanks guys, especially info about the MHD belt wearing on the stop start system, I have turned the car down on a few factors, but this is the main one.

So the big question is, do only some of these 451 fortwo's come with stop start as an option, or is it a specific model or engine? Surley its not on all of them.

I definately want to avoid having stop start tech, if I can.

the MHD doesnt have a conventional starter motor. its a combined starter/altenator!

MHD specific (AFAIK). Turbo 84hp and CDI (again, AFAIK) are without stop/start.

When you see battery replacement costs - you'll know you made the right decision!

Re: Stop start technology, can it be disabled?

There were non turbo 451s from 2008 and 2009 without stop/start and with proper starter motors and alternators.
If it says MHD on it, move on.

And that includes checking the actual car for an eco button ahead of the gearlever, if you're looking on the smart approved used site they couldn't describe a car correctly if they tried.

Starting to understand why all the cars at the dealers are MHDs...

Well I have now read using 'search' on the website all about the problems and woe's with MHD's, (combined starter/alternator), with wear of belt, adjustment and the like (at big cost to owner outside warranty), so will totally avoid a MHD version of the 451.

Its hellish, I just never understand car designers, when they have a good separate starter and separate alternator for years in a fortwo, why bother making complex start/stop technology that wear's done quickly.

So if I see a fortwo for sale now with a MHD badge on the back, I will run a mile
