  • Recommended engine oil for CDi

Going to do my first engine oil change soon on my 451 Diesel. Still got my old suction pump from my 450 days

Can you give me the recommended make and type for Diesel engine. Is it Mobil1 fully synthetic 10w30 ?

Make and reference of a decent oil filter for CDi (an ebay reference will do).

    Thanks.

5w30 iirc, with the MB codes. Filters are better bought from smart (if you can) as others can be badly sized and scrunch up in the canister.

Oh and the later cdi had a larger sump, no idea what capacity, so make sure you've got more than the previously required 2.something litres of expensive stuff.

229.51 (from memory - i've just had a look at my last service sheet, no real use sadly, just says "oil")

If I want to find out which oil to use I visit Millers Oils website, for a cdi 54 with DPF it shows this one http://www.millersoils.co.uk/automot...=49&sector=Car which again mentions the 229.51 spec.

          smart cdi is OM660 http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_223_2.pdf

The manual is next to useless for engine oils on the 451!

Fair enough. It should have the necessary though!

5W30 on my 54hp cdi, at least that's what Mercedes wrote on the service booklet.

Thanks guys, I bought Mobil1 5w30 fully synthetic. Its dear stuff.

Got my oil filter OK off Ebay, a UFI filter for 800cc CDi for £5.

Time to get messy, and remember to put a rim of oil round the filter gasket

Re: Recommended engine oil for CDi

Well, did my oil change in my garage today as its raining outside, hence the blue tarpaulin to protect concrete floor from oil stains. Back door of garage opened for ventilation.

As I have two layers of sound insulation under the carpet, I used some bamboo poles to keep it all up out of the way, to do the job. I removed engine housing panel for access.

I then ran the engine for a while to heat the oil a bit to make it more runny (or you could go for a run in the car for a few minutes. WARNING: Do not make it too hot or you could burn yourself on the oil). I then switched off engine, and used my suction pump in the dip stick hole to remove most of the oil. Note: toilet roll for cleaning off oil from dipstick and hands.

I then removed oil filter housing with spanner (location is just under the back of car, you can see it easily, as photo below), put a tray underneath to catch some dripping out oil, and removed old oil filter. And before putting on new oil filter, ran a bit of oil around the filter housing perimeter seal, to make it a better seal. Then used spanner to fit it all back on again.

Put new oil in, as discussed in above thread, about 2.4 ltrs, and checked dip stick so it was full to just under maximum level. Take your time getting this right.

I have the CDi, but a warning to all petrol turbo versions, that you must never go above max level, or you can damage the turbo. Best not to go above max on any versions, period

So it only took me about an hour to do this, then ages to clean up and remember to clean out your suction pump and its plastic tubing, so it can be used again

Think I have covered everything, but any more hints or tips to others on the subject, just add on, Cheers Colin.

Same applies to diesel engines regarding overfilling - too much and (in theory) it could using the engine oil as fuel and run itself dry/until it goes bang.
