  • 451 CLUTCH ACTUATOR REFITTING

    I've just removed the clutch actuator for service, washed it out with mild degreaser (not brake cleaner), before I removed it I sprayed the bolt head black so I could put back in exactly the same position when I refit it.

    I have now refit and I just wanted to ask do I put back in exactly the same spot as before (following paint marks) or should I move it forward or backwards a notch?

    Only you will know that by the amount of pressure required to get it to line up. The 451 actuator has a preload pressure doo-dah built in unlike the 450 actuator. As long as you have a bit of pressure as you tighten it, it should be ok. I'm guessing you are still having issues with Star clutch adjustment.

      Can you get by with a manual adjustment on these rather than having to go to a dealer and have them connect their machine?

        Greased and fitted back in exactly same place then learnt on star no timing out. Im guessing it was in need of some grease as there was virtually none inside.

          Yes, that's an issue we found a while back. The centre pivot rusts which binds the crescent which eventually creates so much resistance that the gear change is slow and then the spiral gear snaps.

              What model is your actuator on? Were you having problems or just taking precautions? Is it a straight forward job?

                I had no problems just I knew it has never been greased since new and with 2010 CDI 54BHP 20K now on the clock I thought it would be a good preventative measure. Its a 1 hour job outside the house on the floor with a trolley jack and axle stands from start to finish. Spraying paint over all the existing mounting screws the day before will help you set it back into exactly the same position when refitting.

                  What make of degreaser did you use and what type of grease to lube did you use. Thinking of doing this next week. Cheers

                    Personally I use brake and clutch cleaning spray as it flashes off very quickly. For regressing, I like white lithium spray grease in a spray can. White lithium is what is there from the factory.

                        Cheers. Did this as part of my annual service, straight forward job. Actuator looked clean inside when opened , but cleaned and greased accordingly. Back on, no probs.
