Hi just noticed that my air conditioning is not blowing out cool air. You can hear the fan or compressor running when you press the button on, then it goes quieter again when you switch it off. I'm guilty of never having had it recharged since new, 5 years ago! Is it easy to recharge yourself?

There are DIY recharge kits on the market for a quick fix that will add some R134a back in to the system, but in my opinion you're better off going to a reputable garage, or a mobile A/C specialist to have it regassed properly.
In short, a dedicated air con machine connects to the high and low pressure ports and will extract any remaining gas and oil, perform a pressure test to check for any leaks and refill with the right amount of new PAG oil and gas. It's worth having your cabin filter changed at the same time if you don't have it replaced regularly, and if you have any unwanted smells, you'll need a anti-bacterial treatment done too.Last edited by mccsmart2002; 04-07-15, 04:50 PM.

Greetings, yes, the internal fan will run, giving you air to where ever you've selected it, whether the A/C is selected on or orf. To confirm whether the A/C has enough gas, open the engine compartment lid and with the engine running, the A/C and fan selected on, you should see the 'end' plate of the A/C pump turning at the same speed as the belt is turning the pulley. Just don't put your fingers or anything else in there to confirm one way or the other - you'll loose them. With the A/C selected orf, the end plate I'm talking about will be stationary, with the A/C pump pulley turning. The plate is controlled by a magnetic clutch, which is engaged if there's enough gas in the system, the electric's to the clutch is provided by a pressure switch in one of the gas lines. Yes, you can bodge the job with a DIY kit, if you know there are no leaks in the system but if there are, you've just wasted the dosh. The proper chaps, will do a leak down test before recharging. Fixing any leaks, will cost more dosh. There's just a little more in the A/C system than meets the eye. FYI, if you're ever near something that's fitted with A/C and it's on fire, the A/C gas converts to phosgene gas - one sniff and you're as good as dead. Cheerfull chap aren't I????????????/
Cheers, Ian.

Cheers Mad Smart Person. I just checked and the plate is stationary at all settings. So I guess its not operating as either not enough gas or leak. What I can hear when I switch the AC on is the radiator fan switching on and running at the front. I presume its the radiator fan, unless theres a specific fan for the AC? Is this how it would normally operate whether or not there was gas in the system? Cheers Plod

A/C isnt just for cooling, it also works for removing moisture in the cabin which means the fogged up windows clear faster with the A/C on

Maybe a leak or just the fact that you lose 10 to 15% a year under normal use, the cars has never had its aircon re gased so that may account for it.. The pressure tests were fine so fingers crossed. Still works ok at the moment.
