I have owned this car for a couple of years; I have used it only for short journeys - some very short - and recently it has started to fail to engage reverse gear when manouevring, e.g. when parking. When this happens, it will sometimes then fail to engage forward gears also. If I shut it down, wait a minute or two, then restart, it will usually behave itself from that point on.
I'm wondering if this is in any way related to the type of use - most trips I make are only a few miles, within my home village. I am also noticing that the battery is a bit run down, owing to lack of recent use. I'm not aware of any other issues with the car; it's been serviced annually - since new, as far as I know - and I have found it very useful as a local runabout.
Any ideas as to what could be the cause? The car - being over 13 years old - isn't worth a whole lot, so I'm not about to spend big bucks on it.
