  • Model question

There seem to be (a very few) 451 cdi models in existence with a 45 bhp engine. Can anyone please tell me if these have a dpf and all the emission gubbins of the 54bhp model, or are they like the earlier 450 please?

As per 450 I think. Someone will verify.

The DPF only came in with the 54bhp variant so yes, the 45bhp does not have this (the basic engine is the same between the 450 and 451 I believe).

The 451 45 only arrived in the uk in early 2009, handful of months later by the end of the year, they'd EURO5ed it, and 'updated' it's output also.

That's why there are so few of the 45

Yes, the late 59 plates moved onto 54 bhp, mine is registered just a few days into 2010, and has DPF filter and burn cycle. There is actually no problems with it as long as you do long and faster runs to get the burn cycle working on a regular basis.

If you want it as a 'town car only' forget it, as it would clog up with soot, it must have these long runs.

Thanks everybody, this is pretty much what I thought. I have a '54 and do mostly long brisk runs. I had thought of getting a 45 and having it remapped to avoid the DPF thing but I understand the gear ratios are also a bit different. The 54 strikes me as a problem waiting to happen.

You could say that with any Smart with regarding problems with a specific model, ie, MHD belt wear, turbo blown on turbo model, rain water leaks and wet SAM unit on Roadster, No room for foot rest to left of clutch on the new 453.

Better the devil you know, he he. Keep what you have got if its going fine, and worry about it later, he he.

Actually, I love the little beast. And it runs just fine.
