2012 Cdi

Hello my 2012 cdi is loosing coolant probably from the egr valve. My mechanic said we could bypass it instead of replacing it by joining the 2 hoses together.
Would this be ok in form of reliability? will it affect the fuel consumption in any way

You most likely have a leaking EGR cooler. The barbs on EGR cooler will have to be sealed with some heat resistant material. Just connecting the two barbs with a rubber hose is not recommended as a fire risk. Of course no problem connecting the two coolant hoses to each other. Any change in fuel consumption will be negligible.
