  • Help - detached exhaust joint

    Hi -

My friend's ForTwo went all 'boy-racer' last night and on inspection I can see that the exhaust has become detached from the header. I'm not sure how this has happened as the main exhaust unit/silencer is still all attached to the hangers but I can't see how the two parts originally went together - I have attached a photo showing where the gap has opened up which shows one small stub still bolted with sprung bolts to the header and a sleeve part of the rest of the system about 1cm away. This sleeve part appears to house one of the exhaust sensors as well.

Has anyone any ideas on how these should fit together - or if anything has gone missing when it blew?

    Many thanks,

    DT.

Looks to me that the exhaust has rotted through & the flanged part is still connected to the manifold by the clamp.
I think you need a new exhaust.

Yeah you're missing a fair amount of crucial metal there lol

The 451 series are poorly designed and manufactured Smart cars. Exhaust on my 2002 Smart 450 Cabrio is still like brand new inspite of old age and having clocked 211K. They don't make them the way the used to!

How to fix: Get someone that is good at pipe welding and ask if a weld repair is possible. Judging by the condition I do not have high hopes if the rest of the exhaust is in a similar state.
Exhaust has to come off to do a weld repair.

Okay - Thanks for all the input everyone!

Having been under there and seen it first hand I can confirm that welding is not really a viable option.

I'm off to give them the bad news and point them in the direction of a replacement unit.....

              Should be with oxy acetylene.
