  • Sat Nav problems

Hi the sat Nav unit in my fourtwo grand style cabrio is a Alpine 970 but at the moment it is stuck saying I am in Paris, and can't find any gps signal, but every thing else works fine, I have tried to use my Tom Tom sat Nav but as soon as I fire the engine up it loses the gps signal on that as well this also is the same for the sat Nav on my I phone as well many thanks for any advice

    firstly 1 post was enough.
    secondly, its FORtwo

as for your nav problem... you say when you try and use your tomtom and phone they dont get signal. has anything been fitted recently, as in tracker, dash cam, hands free kit?

        Nice and welcoming

With a high mileage smart like wot you have, I'd suggest first a battery reset (disconnect the main battery, count to five and reconnect cleanly)

But as you're saying any satnav in proximity to the car fails? , can you confirm you had those connected to the car for charging purposes as they stopped receiving correctly?
If not can you confirm a satnav works (phone or tomtom) finds satellites and position whilst not actually connected to the car by any means?

(I'm trying to ascertain airborne or connected 'noise', although a satnav should be impervious to airborne although anything is possible )

        Welcome by the way ☺

I've had a similar problem which by a process of illimination turned out to be my phone charger plugged into the cigarette lighter socket.
Plugged it in signals lost unplugged it and signals returned - turned out that I'd picked up a different charger to the one I usually used.

im under the assumption that the radio is factory fit? could be a faulty GPS sensor.

Where is the car parked ?

Having a gps sensor go down wouldnt affect a tomtom OR a phone satnav

When you say the phone/tomtom work before you get in the car, how close to the car are you when they stop working ?

They both work fine right up until I sit in the car and start the engine up then on the tom tom it just loses the gps signal instantly and won't regain a signal at all I have driven about for at least 30 mins and still it doesn't regain it until I get out the car as for the I phone sat Nav it just keeps freezing is it worth changing the gps antenna

Do you have any other odd symptoms from the car at all ?

Or any recent work been done on it in any area?

Just try all these devices again with the ignition on, but the engine stopped.
Then if they don't fault in this scenario I'd guess it's an alternator (or spark ignition) problem
