Fitting a used clutch actuator

I'm trying to fit a used clutch actuator and it appears to be too long

When these are sent from the factory is the arm in the bellow section shorter?

Not sure if it was the correct way but I put the car in gear and the plunger retracted. Fitted the bolts and tensioned the actuator by three marks

All seems to be working well

Someone else here was having problems recently with this (though it's suspected that they have a clutch fault). Looks like you've sussed out how to retract it for fitting.
