Lost gears...

Driving my Smart Fortwo w451 2008 diesel just normal, when the car shifts from 2 to 3 it just went into neutral and service indicator lit up, I turned off the ignition and turned it on again, the starter motor does not respond and neutral is indicated regardless of gear stick position, the service indicator is now off but engine light is on and I have three flashing, horizontal lines next to the tank meter.
There was no mechanical noice or anything before the problem occurred.
I have checked all fuses, disconnected, charged and reconnected the battery with no result.
Any suggestions?
