Re: Roady with Performance Clutch and Charge Cooler

I agree the clutch doesn't affect the gearchange time. Can the software make it faster or must the clutch actuator be tuned?

    This I must have misunderstood:
A lighter flywheel, which one is it BTW alloy or steel?,will allow the car to produce less TORQUE
    ???

Personally I see a stronger clutch is the logical way to go. At latest when it's time to change the clutch anyway.

I'm no expert, but even I can see by just replacing a clutch can't change an ECU's mind!!

Ian, I have been waiting for you to come along and rock the boat, then use it to promot your own work.

Explain? Why, just come drive the cars with it fitted and see for yourself.

Anyone can argue the toss on the boards, but get it the car and drive it.
That is what its all about.

actually it would be good to hear a technical explanation - subjective views and experiences are good - but its all too easy to get caught up in "everyone says its good, so it must be" mentality (at least for the technically inept like myself)

one of the things that i struggle with when looking at how/what to upgrade with the roadster is the relatively small sample set we have to work with, so anytime we can get backup and info from those of you with technical expertise and manufacturers backup - its great.

understanding how and why the technology works (especially when we're discussing signifficant investment) is a real bonus, and is one of the things that boards like this are great for.

          just my 2p of course

My 2p = the clutch has a higher load threshold, that's all I wanted from it, so I am happy, everything else is subjective.

At least it is real and not mythology!

not disputing that for one second (although your happiness is subjective of course) - but the cost of your replacement clutch was virtually the same as replacing with the smart item (which needed replacing anyways) - so your clutch replacement decision is a no brainer as i see it.

I agree with your sentiment, unfortunately this has turned into a competitor wish to place doubt into the results found by those who have had the new system fitted.

The specification of the product has been explained with in this tread. Why the gear change is quicker can be put down to a number of things. The specification of the product, the performance specification of the cars it is fitted to, all of which have been tuned.

The question of the ECU is straight forward in my none expert view. The activation is a simple on off switch that set a process in motion. If the component parts of the mechanical operation are strengthened, lighter and precision made, there operation will be quicker. In regards to the clutch plate, bite is firmer and quicker, allowing less loss of motion.

In my own observations, not only do I feel it’s quicker but, when watching the revs between gears, I am loosing 300 to 400 less than previously. Power is smooth, no long rebuild of revs, so acceleration is continuous. At certain town driving speeds, you can hardly feel the change between 5th and 6th.

You should not be asking does it work, but will it work on my smart.

This is not a significant investment. When your clutch needs to be changed you now have a choice. Smart = £600, Sports clutch £650.

Smart clutch installed at smart at £100 p/h = £600
Sports clutch installed at SAD at £40* p/h = £650
                    Smart clutch installed at SAD at £40* p/h = £??? I'd imagine about £300ish.

I wish this wasn't a selling point, it's not really very fair.

If you can afford it, I am sure it's very worth while.
I look forward to testing it out for myself at the BBQ day.

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

Doesn't the ECU adapt to changes and adjust accordingly?
The plain fact is that this clutch works and has to be tried out and felt through the seat of the pants to have worked.

I would love to see a nitrous application that works and even put on the market if reliable but it seems this is only seen by a select few.

All the performance modifications on my smart have added something and I wouldn't have them if they are purely cosmetic things such as dump valves (don't go down that road ).

It's a shame that we can't seem to wait to try out these new developments before the daggers start coming out. After all these things are available and there are cars out there with them fitted for everyone to see the difference that they make.

what 's the point on showing a picture when you can't see anything... I could show something like that and say I've bolted a nuclear plant on it and you'd have to beleive it just because it has some cables.... -_-U

This thread has turned out so :censor: nasty

We have members who are pushing the boundaries of smart /roadster performance, and they are getting slagged off when they should be congratulated for the hard work which they have put in to the respective projects .

To be honest I couldn't give a :censor: what people do with their own money, but would you all stop kicking off just because you don't agree with the modification which have been released by these people.

If you don't like the smart go buy as Lotus and get used to just how bad a sports car can really be.

                          Have a great weekend everyone
