Absolutely 100% sure. I've got the X-gauge showing the speed with a compensated %age to match the sat-nav and it definitely hits 60 in 3rd. TBH it was a bit of a shock to me that a modern petrol won't do it in 2nd like every other car on the planet. If it was 4th I simply wouldn't bother.

Only boosts to a smidgin over 2.4 absolute and the wheels are the standard Brab 17s.

I'll be having a closer nosey on the way home but if there's 3 changes to 60 I'll be even more critical about it - I already think it's slow & I reckon there's 2 changes to 60 - if there's 3 it's going and I'll buy a real car that'll do it in 2nd...

there is one extra gear in a smart... Normally you only get 5, with a smart you get 6 so the ratios are closer, hence why you have to be in 3rd to get to 60.

I've got a Honda Integra DC5 here with a 6 speed box and it won't hit 60 in 2nd gear even though it will rev to over 8300rpm......

Not being able to hit 60 in 2nd gear in either the Integra or Smart doesn't worry be at all and i'm sure it wouldn't bother most people. There are hundreds of other makes & model of cars that won't pull 60 in 2nd gear so it's not just a Smart.

Smarts have many positive attributes, but like outright top speed, Smarts are always going to be limited when it comes to rip your face off acceleration.

If 0-60 times are your thing then you'd be better off getting rid of your Smart and something with a larger, naturally aspirated engine, possibly with 4wd.

Well said Rose Chap, Cars need to be appreciated for what they were originally built for. The Mechanics and designers definitely did NOT have speed in mind whilst building the Roadster.
Although the car can be made a fair bit faster with mods to give it extra driveability, its still a born corner munching ground hugging fun car!

well said. WTF is one to expect from such a small engine?!!!?

if its more power, speed etc that is wanted from such a small engine, try a cbr600 fireblade!!

As I have posted elsewhere the acceleration of my roadster is the SAME in 1st gear and 2nd gear as some data I have for a twin turbo V6 Galant that hits 60 in 6 seconds. The gearchange time and frequency is all that lets it down.
