Re: Smart Roadster Crash Safety Rating

But it would be nice to have peace of mind that you have the best chance of surviving a crash. if you know what I mean.

ok, volkwagen polo versus smart, the pics are from a real crash:

the polo driver did not survive. although the smart driver was not seat belted she just broke a leg.

that's why i'm sure i can feel safe in a smart.

that forttwo crash test was done on one without side airbags and without the foam head protectors on the inside of the trid!!

good to see the forfour scores ok too!!

the example of the golf v roadster shouldn't have too much attention paid to it TBH as written off doesn't mean bad in a crash!!

i would have thought the trouble with a roadie would be going under the other car!!

haha!! how can they be theory when they physically crash a vehicle into a solid object??

Re: Smart Roadster Crash Safety Rating

i dont really care about crash tests as you could be killed in anything. Nothing is completly safe and yes it is good to have a good saftey rating but to be honest its not that important!

You dont get people who buy classic cars saying "i wonder which one has a good saftey rating"

I like motor bikes which most of you lot will say are death machines, to me they arnt! If everyone worried about saftey motorbikes wouldnt be on roads!

Saftey isnt everything. You could be knocked over by a bus or run over by a car! Live life and dont worry, most modern cars are safe! Except a G wiz

i would say all cars are inherantly dangerous - especially if driven badly!!

.....like the golf gti driver that decided that my BRABUS forfour shouldn't be in front of him and overtook me at excessive speed through a residential area on a blind bend!! idiot!!

I agree with your last paragraph which is the reason I disagree with the rest. I have always lived by the dont go health and safety consious mad as I could get hit by thunder tommorow and die weather healthy or not.Hell I used to smoke until recently, and used to drink alcohol on a weekly basis and that was my excuse.

But I always do what I can safety wise to prevent myself in an accident like wear a seatbelt without fail every single time im in a car. don't even consider anwering my phone while driving even when stopped at lights. So If I absolutly loved a certain type of car but was told it was a 1 star safety rating I would not purchase it. I would always have in my mind when driving the thought of if im in a crash I have little or no protection. I mean i certainly didnt buy the roady with safety in mind but I feel safe in it.

As for the way people look at bikers. I for one dont look down at them I love seeing a motorbike i think they're cool. but its the **** who create an imaginary extra lane on the motorway between the fast lane and the dividing barrier who are the people who give bikers a bad image.

So certainly safety isnt every thing but it always nice to know what level of protection you have in certain situations. like having a smoke alarm, no it wont stop the fire or help you get out of a building but it gives you an extra few mins to get out in the first place. safety always should have its place

I can agree with most of what you have just wrote BUT like i said before saftey isnt everything. Come on if you like a car and its modern then yes you have a chance. Even some old classics are sort of safe!

What i find tho is people thinking that because they have everything, airbags, abs, traction control ect ect then they will survive what ever speed they do.

I dont think so!!!!! if you smash into a car fast enough you may loose your life!
When i had a motor bike my parents especially my mam always used to say "be careful of other drivers" BUT i thought yeah be careful but enjoy what i have!

cars are very safe, motorbike arnt, but out of the two well the bike wins hands down on fun factor but saftey its the worst but like i said before saftey isnt everything! We are all becoming scared of enjoying ourselves!!!!!!!

If everyone one day decided they didnt want to die people wouldnt get out of bed!
And on to the smarts, well as most people on here would say they are safe!
I had a huge argument with a bloke at work about saftey! He recond i would be crushed if i crashed my smart! errr nope thats incorrect as the saftey regulators would not have allowed the car on the road!

he reconded that the smart is unsafe and basically rubbish! i tried to tell him it isnt but it was like talking to a brick wall!

Re: Smart Roadster Crash Safety Rating

Yes i agree fully, some people are overly sensitive. I mean my mum bless her doesn't even like me driving on motorways in my "plastic car". And i agree with all the rest. its just that honestly I dont really read into car safety ratings but I could never justify buying a 1 star car (if any exist) just becuase knowing I am in the worst possible car to crash in on the road would be horrible. as you say be careful of other drivers is the biggest one because no matter how safe your driving is all it takes is one other speeding/drunk/whatever driver to cause you an accident.

But back to the original point its always nice to know as a sense of security. honestly that top gear episode on its owned scared the """" out of me. I used to think 4 stars was basically "only one mark off perfect" which is pretty good, but I was wrong. The difference in 4 and 5 stars is gigantic.

anyway I could talk about this subject all night but cant write down half the points I've got in my head at the moment but safety should always have its place but dont go mad is my sort of philosiphy.

Re: Smart Roadster Crash Safety Rating

I've always had this image in my head, that the slightest hit on a roady on a motorway it would just disintegrate! but doesnt really cross my mind when driving. The fun factor does kinda out weigh the safety. . unfortunately?
But like Clarkson says "one way to go is through the pearly gates of heaven backwards in a fireball!"

That's not right - more deaths and accidents happen in the home than anywhere else. They'd make houses illegal

Re: Smart Roadster Crash Safety Rating

Personally, i think the roadster is very strong structured car. I happened to be behind Benny when he rolled his roadster onto the roof. Well, when i say roof, i meant windscreen. The whole body weight of the car was held up by the windscreen. The rear half of the tridion was lifted off the ground.

As smart-eddy says, theres no substitute for safety, we all need to drive safely. But that doesnt mean you cant have fun (esp in a roadster where low speed corners are fun!) However, you can never account for all the idiots on the road, no matter how well you try.

As for 1 star cars, there have only been 2. The Rover 100 (metro) which was taken off sale afterwards. And the Nissan Narvara pick up truck. This was because the airbags didnt go off in time. Nissan have however, changed the sftware, and its now a 3 star car. Makes you think though, such a big car and the new fortwo 451 is better.BMW 5-series, that got 3 stars first time round until BMW changed interior door panels. Also, the renault Modus was touted as the first small car to get 5 stars. But that was only if you didnt buy the base spec that doesnt have side airbags.

The fact of the matter is, just dont have an accident :p

the roadster faired well - one chassis leg was bent, the crash bar did its job - I had replaced a bonnet, cross member, crash bar, radiator and fan, one chassis leg (four inches), grille and panel, indicators, one wing repaired and airbags, seat belt tensioners.

Golf's floor was twisted and even though it was only four it met its maker.

And no my car did not run under it - hence the fact that the main lights and covers were OK. Golf was stationary at the time.

The G-Wiz is actually a quadricycle and isn't classed as a car at all.
It isn't fair to group it with regular cars. You may as well crash test a bicycle.
