  • Hand Brake adjustment

OK I know it is not adjustable, but I have changed the rear brake shoes, put on new brake cylinders, new brake pipes, bled the system etc etc etc yet the handbrake still goes up loads of notches to engage.

Are the cables easy to raplace or is it major surgery.

    What next please????????

Sorry if the is one of those stupid questions, but could do with some advice please.

    regards

    David

    Re: Hand Brake adjustment

I presume you have done the adjusters on the rear shoes.....that normally sorts it.....if not the cables aren't a major headache...hardest bit is gettingbthem off the car end

If you're doing the handbrake adjustment in the drums, make sure it's not catching between clicks as that's when the cables stretch.

Mine was catching between the 3rd and 4th click I think. I then spent awhile adjusting it and got it to catch on the 2nd click. After putting the drums and wheels back on, I've realized that it's now halfway between the 2nd and 3rd click, so I've got to adjust it again at some point.

        Re: Hand Brake adjustment

My hand brake does about 12 clicks, it moves loads, there is so much free play it is unbelievable.

So looks like instructions need on changing the hand brake cables. Or some other fix please

        regards

You have to sort out the adjusters( windy bit lol!)
Mine bites at 1st notch and nothings shifts it at 2nd notch

            Re: Hand Brake adjustment

Adjustment on hand brake lever is automatic and resets itself each time hand brake lever is in lowermost position. More details on the mechanism on OnSmart forum.
The automatic adjustment won't work if hand brake cables have gone stiff or seized.

You can confirm correct operation of the automatic adjuster mechanism inside the drums:

            1) Remove rear road wheels.
            2) Turn drums so you can inspect the adjuster though one of the 3 bolt holes.
            3) Hand brake lever off.
            4) Get an assistant to push hard on brake pedal while you check operation of automatic adjuster. You should see the the automatic ratchet mechanism turning the wheel a notch each time pedal is depressed.
            5) Ratchet wheel will stop turning when correct adjustment is reached. You should still see ratchet wheel turning a fraction of a notch then moving back same amount when pedal is released.

Is this handbrake system the same for the newer 451 models?

All modern cars with rear drum brakes will have similar auto adjustment of hand brake lever and brake shoes.

                  Re: Hand Brake adjustment

The handbrake assembly in the Roady has it's own take up for slack as well as the adjusters in drums.

Sit on a flat surface somewhere and operate the handbrake assembly about 40 or so times, if it doesn't take up the slack then you probably need a new handbrake mechanism.

First though check the handbrake cables are attached at the drum ends and at the yoke where the cables join the handbrake assembly - it's above the pipes and foreward of the centre pivot for the engine subframe.

Yeah, I know that but similar isn't exactly the same is it.:knock:
