  • Oil stain under the car!

After a trip to Stockholm (maybe 1000km) yesterday I found an oil stain under the car this morning. There is some oily parts pipes close to the turbo!
Can it be a oil-pipe leaking after being rusted?
Witch of these pipes are oil? I think I have them all in the garage.

Above it is just a little oily!

It has not lost that much oil, it was still over the min line.

I might just fill up and go to work tomorrow and see if it goes away:winker:

    Is this the oil pipe?

Is it the same on 45 kw as on 60kw?

If the Roadster turbo fitting system is similar to the Fortwo, then the little pipe on the right in your picture should be the HIGH pressure oil pipe to the turbo - if that has a hole in it, you will get oil SQUIRTING out when the engine is running.
The bigger pipe to the left of it should be the turbo oil drain which is low pressure and if it has a hole will just OOZE out and not lose very much.

The other pipe to the far left is the water cooling for the turbo, unless I have got the order wrong of the pipes!

First of all I would spray that area with an engine degreaser to clean all that oil off. Then you can see where the oil is coming from.

        Good point!
I guess I am single minded thinking of F1 at the moment.

I had it idling for 5 minutes now and there is no leak what so ever!
I am actually tempted to put it back together and go to work tomorrow and see?
Now the start for the Singapore GP if catching my attention!

You might not find it with the engine just idling. Probably needs to be under load for it to increase the oil pressure to the point it finds the hole. Looking at the amount of oil in the picture, I would not have said it was a very big hole, far more likely it is just managing to get passed the washer which fits between the pipe flange (in your spare part picture) and the turbo. It is only held in place there by two small bolts.

It's not an oil leak which is going to drain your car of oil whilst you drive to work and back! Probably just ANNOYING more than anything else! LOL

That is comforting! You know I have 70km to work

I will put the back on again and take it for a spinn so that it gets warm and when take another look.
I might buy a new pipe just to make it look better!

I was driving about 20km and checked again and could not see any leakage so I will order a new pipe and change it anyway because it is very rusty and it could also be the seals.

At a guess, it might be the seal between the oil pipe and the turbo. The bolts which hold it in place shouldn't be done up excessively tight as the seal will be totally compressed and not effective. I would go for cleaning up the pipe, give the pipe flange a clean with some fine glass-paper, clean the turbo face a clean as well, and then reassemble with a new seal.

The pipe is very rusty and if I take of I think it is best to change it even if the leak is from the flange.

Is there a figure on the torque to use here?

What panel is it that is so rusty in that photo? The fortwo cdis tend to abrade their intercoolers snd that leads to oil leaks....

i have been thinking about that! I don't think that is the problem but You have a point there. I will do a more rigid check on that to when I change the pipe.

I checked yesterday when I came home and there is a lot less oil now. Today I was at Mercedes and got the pipe but still have to get the gasket.
