Now it has a set of approved coils and lower spark plugs and leads and the missis says that it feels a lot better.
Now, I find it very odd that a bad coil could make the engine sluggish and occasional misfire without producing a fault code!

I think the only thing left that is not from the old engine is 2 upper spark plug leads 3 spark plugs and the crank Position Sensor witch is new.

I do like to fiddle with the cars but this is rather irritating!
The first time it was real bad (coming back) was after we had been away for a week with the car on a open guarded parking.
I remember now why I used an untested set of coils. I dropped one of the ones from the old engine on the floor and broke of a little bit of the cover for the low voltage connector.

Is it damp at the moment it returned and was it dry when it behaved?

You do like breaking your cars don't you

She is back! Just as confusing as ever!
I am just now having a break from the job of changing the ignition coils.

I would have thought it would have logged misfires on that cylinder tbh?

It was an old one I had changed a long time ago because there was a spark between the cord and ground. It had by mistake ended up as one of the leads on the "new" engine.

When you say dodgy high voltage cable I assume you are talking about a sparkplug lead? was it shorting to the engine (insulation damage) or was it going open circuit (leads pulled rather than cap) or just poorly seated?
