    Good tip!

Jorgen: Why don't you incrementally tighten the belt until the squealing ceases? That way it's tight enough not to squeal, and not so tight as to damage bearings. Too simple?

I have done that a couple of days before the last belt went to treads on the way home from work!
I can tell You that it was not very simple to change (and tighten it) the belt on a parking place.

That is why I made this tool!

You have to know how to measure to survive in industry. The squeal will increase with pulley and belt wear. Tightening until squeal is gone may shorten bearing life.

Was that not a belt overtightened hence it trashed itself? Or did it trash itself due to slipping?

They are a PITA to work on, no argument there!

It was slipping and I tightened it and it was slipping again so tightened it again after the first few retightenings I started to increase the tension just as You suggested but it was still beginning to slip after some 1000km finally it broke!

This has happened only once so it is not possible to tell why it happened but it can never be any disadvantage to get the tension right from the beginning!

I wonder if the initial slipping didn't polish the belt such that no amount of subsequent tightening could stop it slipping.

You have to be right about getting the tension correct from the outset. My car has the original belt and for 65000 miles has been no problem whatsoever. Correctly tensioned to begin with they are very long lasting.

                      Re: Squeeling alternator belt!

If you have been upping the tension it's possible that you have had to much load on the alternator pulley, if it is running off centre it may explain the issue you have with the belts?

This problem seems to have been down to a very bad brand of belt.
I have had a refund for 2 belts.
