On another (Tr.n) forum, someone said replacing the actuator sorted this (dive cut our, due to overheating). Although I think my perm 3 bars (with drive) is due to chaffed gearbox cabling, as mentioned in this thread.

3 Bars and the ability to still drive is not usually chaffed gearbox wiring. In my experience it can be actuator related or even (funnily) that all the brake light bulbs are blown/not working.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the advice Kapt. Q brake lights are working fine, so maybe I need to start looking for a new actuator. Although I started occasionally loosing drive when three bars appeared (usually when wet) before three bars came on perm (with drive). Should
P.s Should shifting be affected with three bars & drive, as this works fine.

Certainly worth looking at the wiring under the inter-cooler scoop first if you were loosing drive when wet at first.

        Cheers!

          Re: Roadster Coupe Gearbox woes..

Three bars just indicates that there is an issue with the transmission.

Getting it on a star machine should help indicate which area concerned.

You could for instance have the car up on a ramp while running gearbox tests or just have the car running and spray the cabling with water if your issue only occurs when wet.

Or even without a star machine have the car up and running without three bars and spray the cable to actuator that passes through scoop to prove it.

Obviously if this happens to be the case it's more convenient than it happening on the road and then you know where to concentrate your efforts.

Using a star machine may help avoid chasing red herrings though.

Thanks for the input, should hopefully get on a Star this weekend. Although 3 bars are on perm now, so can't test. Unless I do a batt reset after reading codes?

When mine had drive and 3 bars it was the wire to the gear box rev sensor.

Thanks Jorgen, could you see the problem, with the car on the ground, or did the error codes tell you this was the problem?

                  Re: Roadster Coupe Gearbox woes..

3 bars & driving fine was caused by dry solder joints in the SAM on ours.

have had an electronic only re-teach a little before three bars with drive 1st appeared, & have read of 2-3 people who had this issue sorted with a mechanical (+ electronic) re-teach, so hoping it's something that cheap/simple.

                      re-teach = / of clutch actuator

Hi 137699, What led you to diagnose dry solder joints in the Sam (before opening it)? Error codes, or elimination of everything else?

Setting bite point using diagnostics needs only be carried out once and there won't be much improvement repeating that.

Connecting to diagnostics to read fault codes may not make you any wiser for this kind of problem. Better cleaning and lubing clutch actuator plus visually examine wiring harness, do wiring continuity checks and repairs.

It wasn't me that diagnosed it - it was S2Smarts. They plugged the STAR into it and it came up with a load of CANBUS errors and Rob said that experience tells them that is SAM related - so they (or rather specifically Tony of T4P) opened up the SAM and methodically went through the boards & resoldered any suspect joints - SAM refitted, 3 bars gone & so far (touch wood) 9 months and 10,000 miles later, they have not returned.

Have heard that a re-teach alone can actually cause this (three bars) issue, in some (but not most) cases (& uses up a % of the Clutch's life too apparently). May (hopefully) find out when I get the error codes this weekend.

Although kinda hoping it's the above (& an easy/cheap fix) & not a SAM/dry solder issue.

What is certain is that too frequent clutch re-teaches wear out your pocket book.
