Pocket book = wallet (as I assume your not suggesting I own a handbag)..
If so, how will clutch re-teach empty it, as mine was free I'm guessing you mean the life of the clutch? Will hopefully also get up on ramps tomorrow to inspect gearbox wiring/looms, as I think that's an issue too (only got three bars with no drive in wet, before electronic only clutch re-teach).

I think he was referring to having to replace the clutch as it would wear it out
I can't see how a reteach would wear the clutch any more than driving though as it just engages and re-engages the clutch whilst registering the bite point and stores it in the ecu as its all electronic?

I don't think* it actually does, just makes the car car more aware of how much (or little) clutch life/wear is left.

Erm, the dry solder joints is a very cheap fix in the scheme of things. I was charged £50.

Main Error codes read were- P2033, P202F, & P202B. After codes were reset none came back on + 3 Bars & TC/ABS & Brake lights off too). However, since then, TC/ABS & Brake light have come back, but this may* because the wheel wasn't recalibrated. Wiring looked fine near the intercooler, although there was a small cut in the (gear cabling) rubber tube that didn't seem to go all the way though (taped up just in case).

                  Hi all

New to the forum but not to SMARTS, have owned two 450's in the past now own a 451 and roadster! RE, gearbox woes wanted to tell you my story:

Bought my 05 plate roadster from a (non SMART) dealer with full service history etc etc. Within a week starting having issues. Three bars and loss of gear occasionally and randomly. Would also sometimes run fine while displaying three bars. Turning off and on again always sorted the problem. Replaced ABS rings, no joy, serviced actuator, no joy and one day thought I'd change the gearbox oil. Low and behold when I drained it half a pint of thick black sludge came out. Replaced with dextron and perfect gearbox ever since (18 months ago). Unusual story maybe but in the end an £11 fix!!!

                    Re: Roadster Coupe Gearbox woes..

Very interesting, been encouraged to change the gearbox oil, so at the next service it will be done.
Have had three bars with loss of drive (for between 10 -25 mins) several times, after long drivers with lots of gear-changes (always/only after lots of gear-changes) since this post. Always get's better (so far) when box/car has cooled down, so oil could be the key (couldn't see how the mechanicals of the actuator would be affected by heat) as car & box oil is 9+ yrs old now, so thanks for the heads up!

                      When oil is thicker....

but the problem here was undoubtedly the oil being too thick.

Changing the oil will do no harm though. Just remember to free off the filling plug first.

I wonder if gearbox oil change is overlooked. My understanding is that SMART recommend every 30000 miles but I've heard many mixed messages including that it is a non serviceable sealed for life unit! I do wonder if someone had messed with mine in a previous life, I checked for oil leaks carefully. My local SMART specialist charge about £100 for the change but it's such a simple DIY job.

Quite right Thrumbleux. If you drain the oil and then either can't undo the fill bolt, or knacker the head it could get interesting. I think in my case the consistency was second in seriousness to the low volume!!!

Probably gearbox oil changes are overlooked. At 30,000 miles most cars will be out of warranty and dealer servicing as a consequence.
A car spending most of its life in town with lots of stop/start driving will put a lot of heat into the gearbox oil (heat being the killer of oils and people don't appreciate just how much heat a clutch generates) just by conduction through the casing.
As you say, it's easy cheap to replace the oil DIY.

I have replaced my gear box oil a few times now. First time just for the what the heck factor. I lovely mercurial like fluid issued forth. The last time was when I changed my clutch and gearbox seals as I'd rather not make a mess on the garage floor! The fluid was pretty clean the last time. But for the cost why ever not unless you are an eco botherer ;-)

Well, I got three bars & lost drive permanently now. New actuator (or box cabling, Gear position sensor etc) prob required, but will get the Box oil changed too.
