  • yay...turbo change!

    Planning to tackle turbo change this weekend. With new turbo and fitting kit from wellsmart. Question is, aside from priming the turbo with oil before reassembling. Is there any little tricks or anything I need to be aware off. Obviously everything will be soaked in pen oil the night before. Any advice will be appreciated! Cheers.

    Just be careful when you remove the old studs. It can make a difference between a 30 minute job and an all day job.
    Don't over tighten the new studs and nuts and don't grease the threads.

      you dont need to prime the turbo with oil. once you start it, oil will get to it

        Ignore him, he works in a garage watching people fix cars so knows everything by proxy.

        The only time you don't need to prime a new turbo is if you manually hold the impeller to stop it spinning for the first 10 seconds of the car first starting or if you have disconnected the injectors electrically so the engine turns and pressurises the oil system but doesn't start the engine which would cause the turbo to spin.

          Well thanks chaps, it was primed (syringe in kit) and seems to all be ok. I did find that taking the turbo off, whoever had it before had also had the turbo off, sheared a stud and then glued the broken stud on (with nut attached). I just tried the double nut trick and out the stud came! I am guessing that's what caused the gasket to rot through due to leaking gas. Replaced the cycle valve at the same time.
