The wipers on my other half's Roadster have started to behave very strangely. When she puts them on normal (slow) wipe, they work fine but when she turns them off they won't stop. So she puts the stalk on intermittent. On intermittent they may wipe once or sometimes three or four times in a row. Then when they do decide to park she quickly turns the wipers off and they stay off.

Erratic Wipers

Greetings, yes, sadly on the roady it is a common problem for the wiper motor to play up. But, on the odd occasion it could be the wiper stalk - to confirm or rule out the stalk, try another - they're the same between the 450 and 452. The SAM is another possibility but would only suspect it, if there's more than one fault / problem with the car that can't be fixed using logic. IE, most SAM problems defy logic. But back to the wiper, if that's where you decide the problem is. Yep, follow the 'how to guide' above - if you make marks as to where the bonnet hinges meet the body you'll have a lot less trouble when you refit the bonnet. In about 6 pints time. Once you've got the wiper assembly off the car, tip a liter of water slowly into where the wiper motor was and make sure the water drains away and does not sit there, if it does sit, clean out the drain path. At this point you can buy another motor or, if you've got the time and tools, have a go at cleaning the original.
First off, file off the rivet heads that hold the wiper cover plate in place, then very gently, lever the cover plate off. there's also a couple if wires/pins running across the plate so be very carefull of where they go and how you disconnect them - the plate will pull straight up. Under the plate will be a seal, take very good care of this as you'll want to reuse it. At this point and before you clean much up, file the rest of the rivets off back to the wiper body surface, now you'll be able to punch them out - with a pin punch of suitable size. Before you ask, what am I going to use to put it all back together - 1/8" diameter pop rivets from memory about 5/8" long. Logic will tell you which way round. Now to start cleaning. To remove the big cog, there's a circlip on the back side, so long as it's not rusted away. Remove this in a small room or box, so you can find the clip then it shots away. Having cleaned it all up, taken care not to destroy anything, applied the proper grease and pop riveted it back together reassemble the wiper assembly but don't bolt it back into the car just yet. You'll need to set up the wiper arms per FQ101 data, If there's a horrible noise emitted from the wiper, it's probably due to the 'armature end thrust' adjustment?? Remember that plastic blot/screw you fiddled with - this is where you need to fiddle with it again. And, once you've fitted the wiper assembly back into the car, make sure (before you put the bonnet back on) that the wipers operate as they should, that is, arms on and blades attached, wiping the windscreen, you may have to 'tweek' the end thrust again, very slightly.
If all turns to custard and it doesn't work, what have you lost? Only time, you've had a bit of fun - on a cold wet summers day. You've tried, now it's time to spend some dosh to buy a replacement - just make sure that what you but has the correct plug on it and maybe have heard to running???
Happy smarting, Ian.

Two months? What's the problem, you guys are having summer at the moment. Whoops, forgot, your summer is only two days, have you had them yet????? And as for the "it's only a few quid" for a new one - where's your sence of adventure, how about "I fixed the bugger - take that" Besides, 33 quid, that's 11 pints!!!! Think of the planet, save the new one for when the old one has rusted away. Nice screws by the way Tolsen, they'll outlast the car. Happy Smarting.
