  • Hackers steal keyless BMW in under 3 minutes

It's cool to have a keyless BMW, until you no longer have a keyless BMW. Hackers have figured out how to break into such cars with ease. BMW has acknowledged there is a problem, but is not doing enough to protect its customers.

Anyone see this clip on Watchdog last night?

They said that it can be done on other makes/models too,....I wonder how safe my 451 is??

Although that does still use a 'normal' key that's cut/matched to a lock barrel so they'd have to force that too.

Your car will be safe enough. High end cars to break for export are targetted.

suprisingly, within a short time i can have the ignition switched on and selecting gears on either a 450 or 451 without the key, the immobiliser is a different kettle of fish, but with the technology they used on the BMW it can be easily adapted to any manufacturer, older cars are sometimes far safer with a proper key

Several MINIs have gone under similar circumstances. The OBD port is a little harder to access and there is more chance of triggering the alarm but there is no official cover to protect the port; some of us have made adaptations which make it much harder to get to the port.

Nothing stopping you wiring in a spark plug to the top of your fuel tank and a having a hidden disarm key!

would be quite entertaining to have a electrical wires sewn into to seat and then having a silent alarm which connects a car coil to the seat wiring, job done, i know someone who wires a camera flash energiser 1.5v upto wires on the handle grips, no-one stole his bike

Those suggestions are good but sadly here in the UK at least, would land the owner of the vehicle in big trouble with the law.

Let them fantasise. In any case the dummies end up forgetting to disable their Heath Robinson affairs and end up hurting themselves.

Some of the fixes include simply unscrewing the port and pushing it up behind the dash, inline switch to one of the pins or a simple cover. By sticking duct tape over the port you virtually eliminate the problem as they have to get in to remove it then the alarm goes off. It then becomes a different complexity of theft.

lol simply have one of those removable steering wheel, unless the baddies have a pair of mole grips they cant steer it away, i could get into a car, plug in the bluetooth interface, the alarm goes off, you lean out of the window and reset the alarm whilst i hide round the corner.and you think it a false alarm, or i keep setting off the alarm till the owner gets pissed off and switches it off, hey presto.
or even better turn up in daylight hours with a recovery truck with flashing lights etc, guy in hi-vis jacket and drag the car onto the back, very rarely do they get questioned

One of the Mini forum lot had her's stolen this way. It was parked outside a bar at 9pm near to a theatre in Gloucester; loads of people saw it, the bouncer stopped the traffic to help them reverse the truck up to it and filled the driver's water bottle for him! She was understandably upset but had to admire their audacity. On the plus side, she did get a free meal at the bar as they felt a little guilty

Yes, that's one of the best anti theft methods but seriously, who wants to carry a steering wheel around with them every time they leave the car?
