Yes another question from me ...sorry : ) Preference or reason why?

Well, if you wan't to fully take the top off you still have to unclip and remove the side bars by hand anyway, which is the same amount of effort as removing the hard top.

I can't speak for other people, but I've got the hard top and I've had no leaks. Also, I'd guess it's quieter (don't know for sure).

      Soft for me,

You can open and close it at will without stopping, you still have some boot to use when it's down, and you can take the roof bars out for the full open top feeling if you want to.

The hard top is quieter (apart from the squeaks!) at speed, and if I had enough money I'd probably buy a hard top and installation kit so I could choose.

Hard top has to be better for the winter.

If you think you might want the soft top, but a car with it, it's MUCH cheaper to add the hard top later, than it is to add the soft top!

My soft top has a nice head liner in grey :p

And my soft top doesn't leak, and hasn't jammed.

I have both. The hardtop is definately quieter, and doesn't always squeak once it's settled in for a few miles...
However, I rarely use it, as I like to use the car as a proper convertible at the moment

My hardtop has the wrong seals, hence it leaks slightly where the a-pillar seal joins the roof... But aside from that I can't fault it...

get the soft top then you can add the hard top later if you like, not heard of it done the otherway around, oh and hard tops do leak no matter what the hardtop only owners tell you, just like the softtop some do some don't.

Yes - it's an aftermarket add on. Does that make it a bad thing?

It makes it warmer in winter and reduces the noise a fair bit :p

                    I agree with Rich.
                    soft-top.
I do have a hardtop too, but only the soft top on the car at the moment. It means that whenever the sun shines I don't have to remove the hardtop and store elsewhere

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

I got mine when I bought my car, and it cost me £750 with the bag and liner (didn't realise the liner was extra!)

                            Brand new about £750-800

Ebay special about £200-300 cheaper, but you will need to get the install kit, and be pretty competent to install it, otherwise it's crossing someone's palm with silver to do it for you, and if that someone is Merc, then you might need a mortgage!

the installation kit (IIRC) is £180 on it's own. and thats probably plus vat too.
it's only £30 if it's built in the car at the factory
