2005 CDI here (Canada). I've use certified as automotive fuel biodiesel from 5% right up to 100% with no attributable issues whatsoever.

And on another forum, as someone pointed out, instead of pollution coming steadily out of the exhaust, instead it all comes out at once when driving on the motorway.

Doubtless some catalyst systems do need engine management control.

However, I don't think that your statement is universally true.

I linked above to the DCL "Mine-X" diesel particulate filters.
          Specifically a closed/wall-flow product.
This is intended as a retrofit product to enable diesels to be used in underground mines.
As a retrofit 'mod' there would be no change/alteration/involvement for any engine management ... if such a thing were even fitted to those machines!
That product family is even boasting about the range of coupling fittings available and their use to "replace original mufflers".
          PDF Brochure http://www.dcl-inc.com/images/storie...oduct05/00.pdf
"A vehicle or engine fitted with a DCL diesel particulate filter
operates normally, using only the heat in the exhaust gas to continu-
          ously burn off particulates."

So, I regret to say, engine management involvement does not seem to be a defining operating difference between open and closed systems in general.

However, to repeat, any objection from smart to biodiesel does not seem to be based on whether the catalyst is an open or closed type.
They've used both types on the cdi in Europe.

Re: Questions about the 451 cdi Engine

Yesterday, smart Croydon informed me that the smart cdi has no DPF fitted.

Today, smart of Maidstone confirmed that MY cdi has no DPF.

Re: Questions about the 451 cdi Engine

Today a smart dealer confirmed to me, by printing the 'datacard' for their LHD diesel that it DOES have a particulate filter fitted.

I'm gonna email some others I think to see what they say , of course the euro demonstrators could well have a DPF as standard, but when asked if the rhd would also have it , she said 'well yes'

Not surprised at all that the smart help line simply 'didn't know'

The girl at the smart dealer was surprised though

smart Croydon - the salesperson didn't know so asked the 'technical department'.

smart of Maidstone - I asked to speak to someone in servicing. He took my registration, tapped it into a computer, and said 'no, your car doesn't have a filter'.

So, perhaps I ought to try another dealer or a dedicated service centre. Dartford or Lakeside...?

Re: Questions about the 451 cdi Engine

The UK cars dont have a particliate filter, simple as that. When they introduced them on European models, it caused a drop in mpg and on other cars as has been mentioned they have caused issues.

Re: Questions about the 451 cdi Engine

Just out of curiosity, I've just pushed smart into escalating this simple pre-sales question which I'd have thought should be as easy to get as what MPG or emissions it produces.
There's quite a few UK car websites which state it does in press releases but obviously have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I'll get back to you when (if) they respond

Be nice if smart ever got their act together :wag:

Wouldn't the price of exhaust spare parts give a massive clue?
(Catalysts cost hundreds of pounds ... )

asked for an 09 brochure pack the other day and it arrived today.

Yes I know there'll be a disclaimer somewhere:p, but on page 14 of the brochure which has UK and ireland phone numbers only on the back of it so can clearly only be for the UK and ireland market , it clearly states:

                        >> The diesel engine.
The well proven 3 cylinder common rail turbo engine featuring a diesel particulate filter as standard boasts extremely low CO2 emissions (88 g/km)

Smart info centre hasn't a clue what they are talking about:wag:

Just had them try and tell me the diesel and the petrol!! had a particulate filter..

Having said I've never heard of a petrol having a particulate filter, I asked to expand on details on that for the petrol,......
...well the exhaust has wadding in it to catch the particulates...

...something brought in by the government...

The enquiry was escalated to CAC a few days ago.. so....

Have CAC not got back to you yet ?, I'll get you an email by end of the day from them or me telling you the progress of this enquiry
                          :tvhappy:

I'll get back to you when I get an intelligent response, we could be waiting some time

Regarding your enquiry on the Smart Fortwo Diesel containing a particulate filter we are unfortunatley unable to deal with this kind of technical enquiry in house. We will escalate this enquiry to the Smart technical department as well as our own escalation process and be back in touch with you with an answer imenantly.
